Just registered and paid membership.

Hello Everyone!!

I currently reside in Hartford, Connecticut and am moving back to Atlanta in the coming weeks. Quit my job (last day is Friday 12/3) and will start looking for new employment once I get settled.

Been a member of s2ki and involved with the NES2KO (New England) group for the past year.

Can't wait to meet the Atlanta folks, attend some drives and enjoy more top-down weather during the year.

Thanks!

Currently Hardtop and winter wheels are on. As it is with most S owners up here.

We had a casino meet and drive with the NYC metro guys this past weekend and most of the guys braved the cold with the top down. Looks like that was the last top-down drive for the year up here for the Northern S owners.

Possible flurries in the forecast. Hopefully I can get outta dodge before it hits.

Serious shopping for my wife means I've got to make make a weekend trip to Buford. We both enjoy the Mall Of Georgia and with Discover Mills just down the interstate we can spend a couple days there. Well, here's my introduction!

I'm Jeff, I'm 25, I have an '02 GP White S2000, a pearl white '88 Nissan 300ZX SS Turbo, a grey '92 Chevy Silverado, and a '98 Marada 2100 cuddy cabin boat. I'm into Auto racing, snow skiing, water skiing/wakeboarding, scuba diving....and bunches of other things!

I've had my S2000 since new, and I've enjoyed participating in Open Lapping track days, SCCA and Porsche Club Auto-x's, and several drifting events. I use my 300ZX in a local racing series (COMMA Challenge) which is divided into 4 classes and is wheel-to-wheel racing, and several 6 hour endurance races. Unfortunately, that car suffered an engine fire over the summer, and I havn't had a chance to fix it before the move, so it'll be staying in Oklahoma City untill I can make a trip back out here and tow it to Savannah.

Mods to the S2k, I only have an AEM CAI. My best 1/4 mile time is a 13.85 @ 100.36mph with a 1.9 60'

Mods to my 300ZX, JDM engine swap, removed all emissions controls, Autopower 6 point roll cage, Stroud Safety 5pt cam-loc harnesses, Tokico Illumina shocks/struts, Suspension Techniqes springs, Prothane bushings, Clutch specialties 6 puck disk with ACT HD pressure plate, DIY manual boost controller (@9psi), HKS BOV, custom turbo-back exhaust (no cat, no muffler, side dump), Nitrous Express 75 shot.
Best time (on old 145,000 mile motor with all emissions intact) 13.6 @ 105 w/75 shot @ 7psi.

Our next track day is Carolina Motor Park this summer, but spots are only open to paid members for now (good reason to join up). I test drove an 04 before buying my 02 and I perceived less leg room in the 04. I had the seat back all the way in both cars when testing them. 6'5" is probably pushing it in the S2k. One of my coworkers is 6'3" and he fits comfortably in the driver's seat of my car (with the top up), but it's close.

I rode passenger in my car for the first time tonight and was surprised by how much legroom there is on that side, despite the hump in the floor. It was as comfortable as my friend's E46 M3. :goodjob:

Hello everyone!

I'm Keith and I just got my 2002 Suzuka Blue S2000 last week. I used to have an RSX, so I've been hanging around with the ATL RSX guys mostly and was pretty active on ClubRSX. I've lived in Atlanta since I was 5, so I'm pretty much a native. No mods as of yet, but intake and exhaust are about to be ordered. Header will be in the future.

I look forward to meeting you guys soon.
congrats on your purchase!~ see you around~~ btw, keep your stock headers and get something else for a grand...;)

hello all. just dropping in to say hi, i just got back from a quick run in the mountains and just happened to meet s2_kwkslver at the top of blood mountain. that car is a thing of true beauty, thanks a ton for letting me get behind the wheel! made me remember my turbo miata days for sure.

as for the formal intro to everyone else, my name is Erin and i drive a 1993 240sx with a thing or two done to it http://www.s2000atlanta.com/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif (won't bore anyone with the details). my other ride is a honda CBR954RR that spends most of it's time in the mountains of north GA and north carolina/tennessee. most of my driving experience has been in the mountains although recently i've started into competitive drifting which has had me on a few tracks so far and a couple parking lot courses. after driving the car i did today i hope to someday soon pick up my own s2k, for now i'll stick to my cheap used cars. hopefully i'll see some of you guys/girls around in the mountains sometime.

Erin ,
It was a pleasure meeting you and following you around them there hills. You gave me all I wanted trying to keep up with you,Partner you have skills, without the extra ponies you would have left me in the twisties.
I was in Greenville for a job interview and took a day of vacation,Anyway I was on my way home down 85 and took a hard right and wound up on the way to the loop.Erin and i met at the top of Bood Muntian. He has done so much to his car and it is as fast as any n/a S that I have come across. Did yu tell me that you were pushing 240 hp at the wheels Turbo gves you bunches of low end power. I do not get to 240 at the wheels until I guess around v-tech,which means when I let my car get out of V-tech you pulled me bad.:goodjob: :drive:
You are welcomed to run with me anytime you can.I enjoyed following your lines.

I tried to post a new thread but the board would not alloy it.I have sent a few pm's asking for HELP!

lol, didn't the event pic look familiar david?

and rick, thanks for the kind words. i was doing all i could to cope with those tires. i'll be happy next month to head to ocala and drift them off clean :drive: . big difference going from a 225/245 staggered combo to these spares with the 205's on them ;) . this car is solid as a rock with the staggered rims, but these new ones just don't stick like those.

did you notice me on 60 falling back and turning into that insanely steep dirt/gravel driveway? i blew a cap off my intercooler piping and had an adventure rigging it on that steep hill then getting my car back up to the road ;) . she's great on the street but not much for offroading :rolf:

I saw you turn around and thought you were going to do the loop again, now I feel like a dumas.I would have never knowingly left you in trouble. Is all ok now?
yeah all is well... i basically pulled out my toolbag, grabbed the duct tape off the top and covered the hole with about 10 layers of tape, enough to seal it and keep it from playing with the MAF readings as long as i stayed out of boost. that lasted until i got to about 5 miles from gainesville on hwy53 before blowing off going up a steep hill and into boost a bit too much:p . another taping and i got home just fine. i've since capped it with much sturdier materials and double hose clamps so it should be good for a while at least :goodjob: . just wish i could find a rubber cap that would fit it right, nobody seems to have anything.

oh, and no worries about not stopping. i actually figured if you saw me whip around like that that you'd think i was having another go at it. that was as far as i was going to go because the engine had shut down (damn MAF equipped cars) and i didn't want to pull off the side on that blind curve. hope the people that lived there, if any, weren't too mad about the deep tire channels i left trying to get out :rolf: . i was much more worried about getting back up that hill than fixing my car.

Hello to all the pretty little S2Ks floating around up in Atlanta. I know there are at least a half dozen down here in Savannah. I just purchased my GPW '01 in OKC, OK in December. It will be down here in Savannah for a few more months before I begin my Officer Candidate School road trip to Columbus, and then Fort Gordon. After that, my beauty will be off the streets for about a year as I head back over to the big bowl of sand.

My average right now is down since my car was stolen a month ago, which had my bowling bag complete with shoes and 2 balls in the trunk. I've been using lane shoes and lane balls and have been doing really poorly the past 4 weeks so I'm down to about 168 right now :(

Lane balls are not very good when you throw a mean hook like I do :)

I don't know if I'd let my boyfriend/husband/whatevah drive my car. It would depend upon if he could drive it well or not. :D I've let guys drive my S to pretty disasterous results (look at my front bumper). :(

Assuming Karen is a good driver, there should be no problem with her driving Jeff's S. Saves a rental car bill.

Greetings and salutations...

Given that I've been posting a bit this may be somewhat overdue as some of the more pertinent details have been dotted across my postings. Anyway, I'm Mark and the rider I'm taking the inside line on would be my lovely wife Debbie... (isn't Photoshop wonderful).

http://www.thetandemlink.com/Images/sidebyside.jpg

Personal: We're married, live in Kennesaw (Unincorporated, i.e., handgun optional), have two adult sons, a couple grandkids, and our youngest is closing on his first home in June and getting married in July (woo hoo). I herd cats (program management) and Debbie manages accounts receivable and we aren't nearly as close to retirement as you might think based upon the age of Debbie's sons or the grandkiddles.

Our S2000 story: We acquired an '04 S for Debbie back on March 19th from a gentleman over in Decatur whom we met via Ebay (didn't meet the reserve, don't you know). Of course, like many sellers, the owner characterized the car as flawless and described himself as someone who really took great care of his vehicles as do so many folks who, bless their hearts**, really don't even though they think they do. Apparently, after it was acquired in April '04, it endured some 15k miles of I85 and other freeway traffic + no covered parking for about 8 months of its life, and picked up some pretty nasty dings along the way leaving the finish somewhat worse for wear. Interior and mechanicals were OK.

Needless to say, it was in need of some TLC but the final price was right and it carried a transferrable 100k HondaCare Service Plan so what the heck. We've been able to get it 'buffed-up' enough to be respectable as a daily driver, but it's too far gone to repair all of the paint damage without resorting to stripping it down to bare metal and having it repainted. As it is, I've pretty much removed 1/2 of the clear coat while simply removing the scratches, waterspots, and other minor flaws. Anyway, Debbie doesn't notice any of this stuff and absolutely loves her little red convertible "as is" so that's that, eh?

Why the S2000 and why this S2000? I try to make a point of not driving the car as, despite growing old, like most of my male peers and motorsports enthusiats I've never quite grown up and there's nothing like a hot little sportscar to draw out those little demons. Interestingly enough, I don't have those little demons with me on the motorcycle... they're probably too risk adverse. Anyway, less I digress, the "S" is a midlife recovery plan for Debbie who spent the last 10 years & 190k miles in a '95 Toyota 4Runner 4WD Limited, acquired as a client hauler when she was still dabbling in real estate. I think it was the 2nd grandchild that put her over the top with respect to needing something to rejuvinate her spirit. Who was I to stand in the way of her enthusiasm for my suggestion of the S2000, a car she really didn't know anything about until I had her sit in one at the local CarMax dealer. It was a Spa Yellow '02 that CarMax being CarMax wanted too much for but, it definitely grabbed her attention, far more so than a C5 convertible, G35 coupe, and a MB C230 Kompressor that I had also pre-screened for her. After she became interested I did my homework, discovered the S2ki Web site and other on-line resources including this one, and got a little bit smart about the car and history. Given that it was going to be her "almost every day" driver (we also have a Suburban that we use to haul the kids, their spouses, and grandkids as well as our bicycles and other "stuff"), the '04s seemed a bit better suited to her driving habits and, well, she really liked the 17's and new front/rear end treatments so that's what we went shopping for. Aside from having to do a lot of clean-up, no regrets: a great little car that is somewhat exclusive.

Whip Round-Up: I should probably note that I've been predisposed as a fan of high-revving 4 wheeled 4 bangers since '77 when I picked up a '75 Cosworth Vega (#1624 of 3,600 produced that year) and became smitten with dual overhead cams, 4 valves per cyclinder, fuel injection, and a really sticky suspension and tire set-up. It only had 120 bhp and redline of 6,500 rpm but, for its time, that was really mind blowing to my peers who were jacking up and putting big cams, 4 barrels, 4.11 posi rear-ends, and headers with glasspacks onto '64 - '73 model year Chevy, Ford, and Mopar muscle cars. It was a great little Solo II car given the high reving engine and torque arm suspension stolen off the V8 Chevrolet Monzas. Dang, I miss that car... My other favorite former ride was a grey market '85 Mercedes 190E-16V (another motor built by Cosworth). For those not familiar with them, these were 4 door hotrods built by MB for a touring sedan racing series in Europe that came from the factory putting out about 185 bhp with a 7,200 redline, had an active hydraulic suspension system, 5 speed short-throw manual transmissions, AMG body kit, front & rear leather Recaro racing seats, and in our case factory 16" MB alloys with 225/40's all around. Again, another great handling road car that extracted a lot from 4 cyclinders. Unfortunately, I acquired this austensibly for Debbie who had just started selling real estate and it proved to be impractical as a client hauler, what with the manual tranny, racing seats, and very aggressive look. Well, that and I was wearing out the tires in about 8k miles. Alas, the aforementioned 4Runner was acquired to replace it and then supplemented in '97 by a low-mileage '94 Mustang GT Covertible with the 5.0 liter motor; a milestone birthday present for Debbie. She never found time to drive the car and, I suspect didn't really like it all that much. Me, having been spoiled by the Cosworths, big V8 motors in heavy cars just weren't all that exciting so we let that one go in '00.

Anyway, more than y'all wanted to know. Oh yeah, we spend most of our weekends cycling around Georgia's mountains and closer in locales on our road or off-road tandem bicycles. And, well, yes, I'm also a motorcycle enthusiast (well, OK, I'd just rather ride anything with two wheels and no top vs. any four wheeled 'cage') but limit my riding to the rather mundane trips to work and back vs. tearing up the Dragon or North Ga mountains (been there, done that, got the Tshirts). We'll do our best to make some of the club's events -- perhaps a weekend outing as we really enjoy the short holiday get-aways -- as our cycling calendar permits.

Later....

Appreciate the warm welcomes, we too look forward to meeting y'all, llife is indeed grand, and no, I wouldn't expect to see any postings from Debbie. Aside from Email at work and infrequent surfing at home, the 'net isn't her thing. She's more of a passive enthusiast who's into the "the experience" and not necessarily the inner workings and associated behind the scenes nuances that go into creating what we see, hear, feel, and smell.

haha, thanks. My first set of questions was directly related to upkeep. So, no armor all for the tires or the dash, right? This 303 protectant, can I get it at a regular car shop or do I have to order it. Also (I don't think this is the right place to ask, but ya'll are already helping here), what kind of oil do ya'll use. I've heard synthetic, but right now I don't even know what that is.

I went from a 1993 Jeep Cherokee to a 2002 S2000, it's a pretty big difference.

okay-what does "let it warm up 2 bars before v-teching" mean?

next: also a big difference between the jeep and the S2000, when driving on 285 yesterday, while it was raining, I felt the car sliding a bit, that scared the crap out of me, and I slowed way way down. In a car such as this, is slipping common or is there something I can do?

LITTLEELVISDAN
05-16-2005, 01:35 PM
hey Joe, where is that thread that was started for new owners that answered a lof of these questions?

Anthony, on your temp guage will you will notice that when cold the car is at 1 bar and when fully to running temp is at 3 bars. When starting cold the rev limiter will not let you go into Vtech (over 62000 RPM) until you at least get to 2 bars on your temp guage. Yes, you have to slow down in the rain in these cars, they are light and have a lot of power so slipping is common if you are going to fast in the rain.

If you want synthetic, then, you typically want to be starting if the car has less than 50k and once you start then you should maintian with synthetic. Synthetic oil is overall better for a high ran engine and keeps it cleaner.

2 bars are the bars on you temp gauge. I always wait until its completely warm, which is 3 bars and that usually takes no more than 2-3 miles to warm up to.

your sliding was probably the cause of your front and/or rear tires beginning to bald.

hope this helps:goodjob:

1) I'd wait until 3 bars on the temp gauge before hitting VTEC, even then if you just hit three bars the car is still not up to full operating temperature.

2) The transmission usually feels notchy until the car warms up fully.

3) The S02's or RE050's are great summer tires, great grip when they are warm but you need to slow down on cold or rainy days. If it's cold and rainy consider driving really slow or drive your beater car (if you have one).

4) Raggtop is also good for the convertible top and Lyxol is also nice for the interior. Spray one wheel cleaners will turn your calipers white.

5) An intake/header/exhaust IHE will mostly change the way the car sounds and will only give back small HP gains, a supercharger is the biggest bang for your buck (or more like 5,000 bucks).

6) I'm not telling you where the secret compartment is but the fuel door release is near your shoulder as you sit in the driver's seat.

7) The car is not meant for the dragstrip, the clutch and rear diff will only hold up to minor abuse.

8) Clear bra is nice, go to www.speedfilm.net (http://www.speedfilm.net/) and call Dave Dearing if you want to keep the stone chips off your car.

9) When buying 18" wheels verify you have the right offset otherwise there's a good chace the tires will rub. Even with the correct offset you may still see some rubbing on the fenders under really aggressive driving.

10) Most owners (and Honda) recommend not changing to synthetic until 7,500 - 10,000 miles but after that shouldn't have any problems. Don't do your first oil change until at least 3,750 because there is an additive in the factory oil to help with engine break-in.

That's just a start, I'm sure there are about 90 more things to list but I'll let you abosorb that for now.

Always have your gear engaged. do not slam on your brakes, keep your tire treads more than 30 at least. I went from 97 Chevy Conv van to 00 S2k, and had to face that sliding since i had my rear tire balded... That is real fear... I still get very defensed when it rains. Do not slip! that hurts! Check your tire treads, If its still good, take your car for alignments/wheel balances.

Oh Ya! if you switch to synthetic oil, get used to burning about a quart every 3000 miles. This is normal as synthetic in our cars burns off very quickly. The best synthetic for our cars is LE (Lubrication Engineers) Allan Cox in Marrietta can do your oil changes with LE as it doesn't burn off and is probably the best oil on the market.

LE isn't synthetic, it's mineral.Really? Well no wonder it doesn't burn off like other synthetics. Little Elvis had a Blonde moment... :rolf: You learn something new every day.

My car has just over 11k on it. The GM from the dealership had it; I know that they are replacing the tread on the back tires for free, which makes me feel pretty good.

So, at 11k it looks like I'm going to be using synthetic oil which is fine. So the LE is not the right one to use or the right one to use?

(if at anypoint I need to take these questions to another section, just let me know, I appreciate the expeditous assistance here, though)

okay-what does "let it warm up 2 bars before v-teching" mean?
The temp. gauge shows your engine temperature as bars. 1~6 bars, i believe. When your temp gauge only shows you one or two bars(early), Your engine is not ready to go for a full/hard run, will automatically cut off fuel, when you get 7200 or lil more engine rpm. 3 bars on your temp gauge is proper engine temp., I wouldnt run at full throttle until you get 3 bars on your gauge.

Well, the s2000 talk section is a bit more appropriate, but we can forgive you since you're a new member. If you're not a paid member you can't start posts on your own, but you can add to ones that already exist. If you have a technical or general question about the S2000, you can ask it here:

http://www.s2katlanta.com/%7Es2katl/forum/showthread.php?t=36&highlight=questions

It's for non-paid members that want to ask questions. Also, don't forget to check out the new members info thread: http://www.s2katlanta.com/%7Es2katl/forum/showthread.php?t=1069

Don't forget that we have club sponsors and vendors that give us discounts if you're a paid member. Things like tires, tint, electronics, etc.

As for your question, you are at the perfect time to switch over to synthetic if you want. Most people use Mobil 1 10w30 full synthetic and if you really want to be fancy, you can use Amsoil which is harder to find. Don't forget that the S2000 has a special oil filter so you shouldn't just take it to any oil change place b/c they might put just a generic honda filter on.

It really was a steal. My father was being nosy when he found out that I was looking for an S2000. One of my personal life goals was that the first car that I bought would be a convertable; unfortunatley, most convertables that are inexpensive are also...well...(and please no offense to the ladies)...kind of girly.

Anyway, so he's over at Team Honda in Lithia Springs and the new GM just put his S2K on the lot. It's not even in the inventory system (or whatever they have), and my dad drives by it with the sales guy. He asks the price and the guy misquotes it.

Since I never bought a car before (yeah yeah, I drove my high school car until it literally fell apart), he's really helping me out. Got to appreciate the parents even when we think of ourselves as "adults." During the sale my dad holds the sales peoples feet to the fire about the misquote and I get a pretty new S2000 for a really good deal.

My dad is proud of himself for helping out his son and I'm happy as a clam since I get a kick ass car (though taking my mountain bike to Helen will now become a much more difficult task). All in all, it was a good last Wednesday. I learned to drive a stick Thursday night on my roomates Wrangler, picked it up Friday afternoon after work and had my first road trip down to Auburn U. that very same day.

As you can tell, I'm really happy to have it. A little nervous though, I want to make sure I take good care of it (unlike the jeep) and not do anything that will hurt the cars performance or value.

I use Mobil 1 15W-50. If you drive the car timid (like a lot of people do  ) you can use a good quality non-synthetic (dino oil) like Castrol 10W30. If you drive harder I recommend a synthetic, like what I use. Can use a change interval of 7250 (it's in your manual for dino oil) but I'm kinda anal about it and I change at about half that. If you run the car in Vtec alot (it comes on just past 6,000 rpm) you need to check your oil about every other fill up until you get to know the car. I started using synthetic at 36,000 miles and burn a quart about every 3,000 miles too, but I love to drive it fast (but not more than 10 miles over the speed limit, except for those times that the windows are up or down). :D

Ya, as Joe mentioned, be sure to use a genuine Honda PCX oil filter!

if you really want to be fancy, you can use Amsoil which is harder to find. Amsoil is great.....I get mine in a case of 4 - 1 gallon jugs. Anyone ever wants to get any or split a case let me know http://www.s2katlanta.com/%7Es2katl/forum/images/smilies/grinning-smiley-003.gif

You should also take a good look at your front tires while your at it. The S2000 has some negative camber up front that will wear the insides of the tires much quicker than the outside. Make sure your not just looking at the outside of the tread, check all the way across on the fronts. This has been my experience anyway.

As for LE oil, many people have varying opinions on what oil is the best and how often to change it. It comes down to what you like, how much you are comfortable spending, and how often you want to change the oil. If done at a regular interval even good ol' dino oil does a great job protecting the engine. Beyond that it's what you feel comfortable with.

...(though taking my mountain bike to Helen will now become a much more difficult task)...You will forget the mountain bike once you have taken the S to the mountains. There's nothing else like it. This car really grips in the turns. The closest thing may be a sportbike.

Oh yea, welcome to the club.

One other thing that the masses don't go for. There are tires with GOOD wet traction. These have a fraction less dry traction but are really good in the wet.

These tires are not popular because of the reduced dry traction.

Helloooo everyone! New member here! Met (damnit...can't remember his name) in traffic last week on sandy plains, and he told me of the boards and club. He was in a white '00 with carbon fiber hood & trunk, ~18', brembos and red interior, & many mods by the sound. Sorry short term memory loss....aagghh.... anyhow cool guy. I just got my 02 about a month ago, and am in love (as much as you can be with a car). :) Will try and get to some of these weeklies at Frankie's and definitley want to hit the road as soon as a trip comes up, will check the calendar right after this. BTW I am signing up for the scca points event #3 for June 5th, can't wait! Was going to sign up for this Sun., but I need to get my brake pads replaced first, indicator is going off already on them :( . Anybody else on here do this at Turner Field... if so drop me a line, and I'll see you there. I met up with a guy named Stephen who drives a S4 and plan on heading down there with him and his guys who drive for Mundy's audio video. He's trying to talk me into doing Road Atlanta also sometime.... that sounds like fun! But really I just want to hit the road with some ppls for some free driving up near Helen, been there a couple times but not with an S. Take care, great site!
