View Full Version : December Monthly Drive
Cyclon36

I decided against a drive through one of the Christmas lights events b/c a slow crawl with a clutch would probably kill us all. The December drive will be back to the pavement pounding ways that we're use to in the North Georgia mountains around Toccoa Falls. The drive will take place on Sunday, December 12th. I'm still finalizing the route and schedule and will let you know when it's all ironed out.
***Note: For liability reasons, S2000 monthly drives are reserved for members and guests with S2000's. Any non-S2000 drivers must be cleared by someone from administration before being allowed to participate in monthly drives. Drives where participation is open to the public will be stated as such. If you don't have an S2000 and wish to participate in a monthly drive, please let the administration know before the drive day to get OK'd.***

Ok, the poll is closed and by popular demand (a margin of 1) the drive will take place on Sunday, December 12th. I cleared the thread of the arguing about what day in order to make room for more relevant PWing. I will post the route after the November drive.

I updated the top post with a disclaimer for non-S2000's. I wanted to address the concerns we discussed earlier last month about open events and so forth. Waivers won't be necessary, but we will be covered under the S2ki insurance policy.

are you guys taking 85 north to toccoa or 85-985? or diff. route? The route will be determined this saturday on the pre-run. That's usually what the pre-run is for. That way I'm not guessing and know how long things will take and where food is and all when the real thing comes along.

Hey guys, unfortunately I will not be able to make this one as I'll be working all weekend in Sacramento (yet again!! I'm starting to hate this job!)
Anyways, about the non-S2000 drivers joining mountain drives, I think such a rule is childish and obsurd. What's the difference in my friend who drives a 911 vs. my friend who drives an S2000 (both of which are not members)? It seems this is a cop out for non-S2k drivers. Blaming it on legal reasons doesn't make sense to me because I don't think the club is legally responsible for any accidents without a charter to be established as a non-profit organization. Basically this is an immature move to implement discriminatory laws in a club that is founded on the basis of having fun. Having fun is something you do with your friends, not just official members. Just my $.02.

Just my $.02.Jason, I can appreciate your concern about having fun in groups. earlier in October we talked about the insurance policy that covers us from S2ki and other things like the drives. The disclaimer is there only to keep cars that are not in the same class from trouble. Now, in no way would a 911 or STI or other good handling cars be turned down from participating in the drive. We just don't want to see some high school kid in a civic with a lowering kit try to keep up with us and end up hurting or killing himself and/or others (no offense to civics). I just put the disclaimer there so that the admins would have the final say in who goes and who doesn't. It's very simple for anybody to ask to see if they could tag along, the disclaimer doesn't necessarily mean they will be turned down. We're not trying to discriminate, just watch out for the good of the club and others.
Perhaps the notice sounded too demanding? I edited it and reworded it a bit to make it more non-2000 friendly and less threatening.

Anyways, about the non-S2000 drivers joining mountain drives, I think such a rule is childish and obsurd.
This "rule" was brought up, voted on and passed during the club's last business meeting...it's not just something Joe came up with on his own...there are a number of members who are concerned about our liability during club sponsored events should someone be injured during a drive...
If we were to allow non-club members to continually attend our events, we run the risk of something happening...due to this, we also risk having current members leave the group...I for one don't want to lose club members just to allow non-club members to tag along with us...
This is an S2000 club and these are S2000 club drives...there is nothing to stop anyone from going up to the mountains to drive anytime they want...however, by continually allowing people who are not members to attend we risk a lot of problems (including the fact that it takes away one of the incentives for people to actually become members of the group - what's the point of paying your membership dues if you an attend all the club activities without being a member?)
So...I agree with the rule...I supported it and voted for it at the meeting...and I will continue to support it...
how about an update on where to meet, what routes taken, how long, lunch etc.?

how about an update on where to meet, what routes taken, how long, lunch etc.?
I was just talking to Mario about that tonight. I'm not sure how we did it in the past, but Mario mentioned that we met early at Toosy's and made a few rounds before it got too busy with other riders/drivers/cops.
I didn't go as far as I planned Saturday, so most of the route will be what was on the SESM. Roads will include 60, 180, 17, and the Richard B. Russell hwy with a stop by brasstown bald.
Does 10:00am at Toosy's sound good to everybody. I figure we'll leave around 10:30, do a run and stop in Helen for some lunch then do some more.
so the route towards toccoa would be 400? not 85 or 985? what road are we taking for caravan from toosy's to the mtns...???

12-08-2004, 10:44 AM
Ok, more info. The Toccoa falls route has been slashed. The route that I mentioned on the last post is more around the helen/deals gap area. I needed more time to plan the Toccoa route so I just stuck with the tried and true. Time schedule will go something like this:
10:00am. - Start gathering at Toosy's.
10:30am. - Leave Toosy's for 180 loop.
Sometime later - After a figure 8 of the loop and the richard b. russell, we'll stop in Helen for lunch.
After Lunch - Shoot through the route backwards
After that, anybody that wants to go more can, anybody that wants to go home can.
End of day.
That's the general idea anyway.

Danny, yeah something like that, but there's more of the rout to the east of brasstown bald. That road wraps around to 17 next to helen, we'll be taking a right there onto the Richard B. Russell hwy (348). It's a nice run that covers alot of ground.

Come on!! Let's go. I wanted to drive at Road Atlanta this weekend, but I would feel really bad for my car. Drifting last weekend, and tracking the next would be kind of rough on it. Besides, I have another set of drift tires on the back of the car, so trying to make it grip would suck.
Weather is going to be partly clouded, 55 highs and 4x lows...good weather x2 :)

Hi All! David and I had a wonderful time on the drive today! We are so sorry we had to cut out early, but with his back going out on him again, it was too painful for him to sit in the S, even for short periods of time. I'm so glad we went though...it was great seeing everyone today, both old and new members! There was a bunch of us! I really feel so lucky to have such a nice group of folks to hang out with. http://www.s2katlanta.com/%7Es2katl/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif I took a couple of pic's...one of my fav's is below. I am so excited we got to see SNOW!!!! This pic is of Joe and his friend (Jeremy I think?) the "media" guy. At first I thought the picture sucked, but after looking at it closer, it's not too bad since I got a (smooshed) reflection of Joe's S on David's hood.

It was a fun ride everybody. I'm glad we could get a big group out this late in the year. Definitely top down weather! I think we did pretty good with not too much traffic. Aaron of course almost left us for a second when he slid across into the other lanes and John kicked up some dirt from the side, but other than that and Davids 10 second burnout/rev session it was a really tight group the whole time. can't wait for the spring!

I had loads of fun in spite of the stone peltings. ;) :)

Well, y'all join the club! We ALL have those paint chips (except for maybe those that have StoneGuard on the car). You may as well wait to paint, 'cause it's just gonna keep happening all over again. It sucks, but it's part of being an owner of an S! OR, you can buy my Colgan bra and rearview mirror covers if you want. I never use them anymore.

Great drive Joe! :goodjob: It was a lot of fun. It's been too long since we have been able to go on a club drive. I was a little chilly too but it was worth it. It was nice to meet the newbies and visit with the rest of you we haven't seen in a while. Really enjoyed it, wished we could have stayed longer.
Thanks for sharing the pics Wendy and Jeremy, very nice. The snow ones are cool.
The first part of the drive was so high up there was snow I take it since you (Wendy) took the one of Joe? Sorry we missed that. We only got to see it from a distance.

Yepper! It was cooool (literally!). I was so excited!!! David had me thrashing about the cabin of the car as he was aggressively driving and drifting on twisties, and all I could exclaim was, "Oh WOW! Snoooooow! Lookit how pretty! Lookit the snow!!! Lookit!!!!! Pretty Snow!!!!" :santa: ("Lookit" is Jerseyian, and is short for "Look at that".)
How come y'all (you and Aaron) didn't go with us in the a.m.? You weren't doing what I think you were doing, were you? (That being straightening your hair, which looked AWESOME btw - it's long!)

(That being straightening your hair, which looked AWESOME btw - it's long!)we had wanted to be there, but I let T sleep until 9. We didn't get in from the company party until 12:30 am so she was tired.
And we couldn't just shower & go. Had to dress for the afternoon party & pack since we were staying overnite at my boss's. We didn't pull out until 10:30.

Driving through the snow capped mountains would have been awesome. Sounds great and made for really cool pics. I would have been just as excited, I love snow.
Thanks Wendy.......I was showering and straightening my hair for the party before we left.
Glad we got to come for a while too. It was a blast.

very nice drive and great weather fo top down touring. Hope I didn't scare anyone to much - that curve just looked like fun with no one coming from the other direction, though I did break over the line further than I'd intended. Forgot my trunk was LOADED with stuff for the party we had to leave a bit early for. Pendulum.
Wish we'd had a video camera to film Jeremy while he tried to sit up & take pictures over the back of Joe's car while charging through the esses & humps ;)
So, Aaron, You need to be careful on them roads :nono: No crashing allowed.
I thought I was going to spin out the whole time we were up there. Yoko.ES100's suck. That has to be one of the crapiest tires I have ever had on the car. They were free though,(thanks to Panic) so I will continue to thrash them.

Called the Dawson County Courthouse today, the fine was only $64. I'm lucky it isn't more. Guess I need to slow down a bit.

Wow, that's a deal. You should throw a party with the difference of the money you thought you were going to pay. I know, mine have always been around $100 for just 14 over.

Dang, wished we could have made the drive, but S'ing both days was just no feasible this time. Can't believe you had snow!!

That was SOOOOO great!
I've met my adrenaline quota for the month now. I just posted 48 pix on my site.. direct link is http://homepage.mac.com/jeremycking/PhotoAlbum17.html
I hope I didn't just botch my first post with that link. If I ever get to come along again, I'd really like to swap cars at each stop so there'd be a little more variety to the shots.
