View Full Version : Place to put my S - need ideas...

My S has been my primary and only driver for the past few weeks now and I'm pretty sure now I want to keep it after I get the Lexus. However, I have a dilemma. My cars have always been kept in the garage. I want to keep both my S and the new Lexus in the garage, but now that David and I are getting married, we will have four vehicles and a two car garage (one of which is his truck and stays outside). His S has always been garage kept, and it's only fair that he has a place to put his baby once he gets it back from Alan Cox. Since I will probably be driving the Lexus most of the time, I want to keep that readily available.
Now, it doesn't make financial sense for me to add a third garage bay to my house, as I don't think I will be able to recoup the expense if I ever sell my home. One option is to store the S in a storage facility, but those things are a lot more expensive than I realized - I think $150ish a month. Buying a new house with a 3-car garage is another option, but if I did that, I wouldn't have the S anyway - I'd have to sell it. I've thought and thought and my last option is the most 'creative', but y'all may think I am crazy. I'm thinking about a portable garage and putting it in the backyard (back in the little patch of woods that I have) and keeping my S back there. I'm not sure how I would have the floor yet, but before I persue it further, am I nuts? I just don't know what to do and I'm running out of time. I need ideas. Any suggestions?

Yeah, I have a suggestion. Get a cover for the lexus and keep the S in the garage.

I don't see the problem, Davids car is never running anyway....
Sorry, couldn't resist... :D

Joe - good idea, I've thought about that, but then we have to deal with car shuffling issues and the car will be cold in the winter, and I will be cranky getting into a coooold car. It would still be exposed to the elements, but a car cover would help.

If you have the room, you can get a small carport. They come in Aluminum, vinyl, ect. and give a bit more protection than just a cover.

shed or outbuilding is a good idea. I had one put up at my place -- 10x12 -- it was done a in a couple days, has some attic storage and cost about $1500.
Mine's up on blocks so there would be the extra expense of pouring a slab, but then a small portion of the building expense would be transferred to slab expense.
I can put you in touch with a good company if you decide to go that way

If you have the room add the "mini" garage (or gayrodge) out back or don't buy a fourth car! Don't forget to add in the expense of adding concrete to get to the building out back, you don't want to drive through the grass all of the time.

One day we will. Problem is, 3 to 4-car garage-type homes are massively huge and carry massively huge price tags. If I bought one of them now, I wouldn't need a 3 car garage anymore, 'cause I wouldn't have the S anymore!
instead of using concrete, you can lay out bricks like a railroad track...parallel brick path to your new 3rd garage.

Before you rule out moving, you should do a few internet searches. Susan and I have been looking for a house with a three or more car garage. We have seen plenty in the $200K's range. Not sure what your price range is, but I bet you can find something. The down side may be an increase in your commute time.

Since I was in the business, the NOAH cover is the best protection. The all cotton napped underbelly cover is easiest on your paint.
Just my opinion, YMMV.

Thanks for all the ideas and thoughts everyone!
What's YMMV?
Todd, where'd your engine go now? We saw your car at AC, but the engine was gone again!
The name that Aaron gave me for a good builder of sheds/garages happened to be Brandon's (my ex's) step-dad!!!! EEEK! Actually, I know he does very good work at good prices, but I feel funny calling him. I may do it though, we'll see.... If I do, I am not going to put a driveway or bricks through the backyard. With the way my yard is set up, it would look awful. I'm gonna have to drive on the grass I think, but I don't think it will be that big a deal. (note to self: prevent s2kjones from doing donuts on wet grass in backyard...)
John - you are right, there are a lot of new houses going up with 3 car garages, but you do indeed have to go farther out or make other sacrifices. I feel like I have a pretty nice house right now in a great area and we are going to stay for a while in it until some(one's) financial obligations are settled. With me helping to get those handled, it should be no time! s2kjones shall be debt-free like me!
I can't belive I wrote all this in the 'quick-reply' box. Oops!

A compromise to the bricks or concrete drive could be pavers. There are some brick or concrete pavers that are not solid but allow for grass to grow through them. So from a distance you still see a grassy yard but they provide some support and stability to drive on compared to dirt and grass.

It hasn't occurred to you that 4 vehicles for 2 people is unnecessary? Consolidation of at least one would increase your disposable income?
Just wondered if you had considered?
suzukasue
09-21-2004, 10:55 AM
Pavers are a good idea - but would they break under the weight of the vehicle?
Grainger - you are right - 4 vehicles for 2 people IS unnecessary, I agree. My plan was to consolidate what I had, and thus sold my Accord and intended to sell/trade-in my S. Now I can't bear to do it! Now we are back at the same problem as before as a result. At least the Lexus will give us a 4-seater vehicle. The other 3 are all 2-seaters!
silverfoxs2k
09-21-2004, 11:12 AM
The pavers that I am thinking of are several inches thick and are designed to be buried in the dirt with only the top edge at ground level. The exposed surface is really an edge that has some design like an 8 or an H versus the pavers that are solid. The design combined with the dirt packed around them make them strong enough to drive on.

I have a 2 car garage with the S on one side and a bunch of junk on the other. I keep my G35 sedan outside cover and my non-running 1975 Porsche 911S. I purchased all my car covers from Blue Ribbon out of Cali., and they all have held up through the mild winters here in Georgia. I would recommend going that route, and I would suggest Covercraft as the choice of Companies. They are one of the most establish and oldest car cover companies around and sell a number of different type of covers.:fro:

Ok, so I had a flash of inspiration. It's not a cheap alternative but it does solve several problems and would be ultra cool.
Make David play with his playstation in the computer room. Close off the room and remove the floor, then put in a car lift and put you car on that. David could park his S under your's or vice versa. David could then use the lift to do all his S2000 maintenance (and mine).

Not to steal your thread, Wendy, but the engine was removed (again) and this time shipped back to Golden Eagle. Alan Cox thinks that they messed up the crank shafted when they "turned it" for the new rods.
Sherry's team pulled the oil filter and found metal shavings. They then pulled off the oil pan again, and examined the rod bearings to discover cracks in the bearings (after only 30 miles of driving.) Remember, this is the second set of rod bearings that the engine has chewed through, and I have not even driven the car.
Soooo it looks like I will never get my car back!
This thread is about needing ideas.....
Besides being patient, does anyone have any constructive suggestions?
Please feel free to start a new thread and save this one for Wendy.

Yeah, but if you got a lift with two Ferrari's, you'd still be out of space for your S. It just doesn't make sense David.

Yes. We measured it as soon as we got home last night. The ceiling needed to be at least (the height of the S2000 x 2) + 9". It's not gonna fit. Which stinks 'cause I thought it was a great idea, plus David could get under the car easily to do repairs and such. BUMMER!

Anyone considering a lift- check out www.revolutionlifts.com (http://www.revolutionlifts.com). I believe they're cheaper and of higher quality.
If it was me I would just put the S's in the garage. I know leaving the Lex out sounds painful but it'll survive. It'll be more practical coming and going. And if the weather gets bad throw a cover on, or flip a coin.

That's not an option. A new car must go in the garage. I may be getting a storage unit for my S again

anybody suggest an over/under method yet? My buddy had the same problem. If you have the vertical space you can get a pneumatic (spelling?) or hydrolic car lift installed. It woked great and was a whole lot less expensive than an add on garage. The S's are small enough that you probably could get away with it in a standard 10 or 12 foot tall garage. Store the S's on top of each other and put the Lexus next to them. The S that you drive the most stays on bottom. The whole who's on top thing is for you two to sort out:D The truck can stay outside.
