Both the Porsche Club and the BMW club are hosting AutoX events at the Gwinnett County fairgrounds (off Sugarloaf Pkwy). Anyone interested in attending please post here. Below are a listing of dates.
BMW Club AutoX events:
June 27th
August 15th
October 24th
Porsche Club AutoX events, Guest fee is $25:
July 18th
October 10th
November 21st
There is also a May 16th event as well going on for the BMW Club. I'm registered for this one.:D
You can register for the BMW Club at: http://www.peachtreebmwcca.org/ax2004/EventsAX.asp Guest fee is $30 and an extra $10 for a helmet rental.
Not sure where to register for the Porsche events, but here is the site: http://www.peachstatepca.org/ Guest fee $25, don't know about helmet rental.
Here is the site for the ApexBenefits.biz Atlanta SCCA Solo II Series-2004 Schedule: http://apexbenefits.biz/ABS-Mtrsports.htm Guest fee $35 and FREE helmet rental.
Any SA or MA 1995/2000 helmet is "required" for all auto-x events.

I will be at all of them, I have always loved to autocross, but the closest I have gotten to doing it is weaving through traffic. But do you need a helmet to do it

You don't need to own a helmet. BMW charges 10 to rent one and for all other events they are free to the particpants to borrow.

Good to see some interest in the AutoX events. I will make it there, just need to free up a weekend or two and get over there to participate.

Do they have a limited amount of cars that can auto-x in that day? Do they ever fill up and you get turned away. Also these dates do you have to register before you go? Like you just can't show up and pay your dues.

^ Atlanta SCCA is so crowded you have to pre-register, you get assigned a "run time" and a "work time" and you're usually stuck there most of the day.
I think it's a less crowded and less formal with the BMW and Porsche clubs because they have fewer participants and fewer rules. I would bet you could show up and run at these events but I'd ask ahead of time to be sure.
I might try to make the May 16 event.

Well points event #3 is taking place on May 16 so I won't get to meet any of you. Too bad. You all should come out to the SCCA event and talk to me. :)

So how was Gwinnett? Did anybody go? The SCCA event at Turner was pretty fun. There were two other S2000 drivers besides myself in B-stock so that was cool. BTW, a 350Z continually kicks our ass. What a pitty.
I had fun at the BMW event this past Sunday. 6 runs :D . Though I was disappointed that I didn't see any other S's there. Oh well, maybe the next time around.

Adam, you should have come out to the SCCA event. The other two S2000 guys would have been some good competition for you. They were both on street tires and have about the same level of experience.
Six runs is pretty cool though.

I missed the BMW event - my wife's family showed up suddenly so I didn't have time to run off on my own, maybe next time.

I'm game for the June 27th BMW AutoX. Trouble is we're going on a drive the day before. Either me or my S may not be up to it, but it would be good experience for Roebling! They aren't even taking registrations yet so will keep checking. Is a deal for the money!!

Man, I think the BMW club has purposefully scheduled their events to coincide with the SCCA events in order to keep those pesky SCCA holigans out of their sedate auto-xes.
S2kdude, if you are just going to watch, come to the event at Turner and I'll give you a ride-along. There is a lot more action to watch at the Turner events.

Wife and I went to the BMW AutoX up at Gwinnett Fairgrounds. Weather was nice and had a great time. Met 2 S owners, Adam and Jason. Adam raced and had the third fastest time in his class ~45 seconds, followed by a Beemer, first place went to a Caterham (really cool little car) at ~40 seconds. Adam runs the entire course in 1st gear!! I gotta do this!! :D
Carded both. Adam's posted on this thread, Jason was sick so he didn't run. Invited both to the Super Meet!!

I didn't get a chance to get over there but I'm going to try harder to make the next one.
Actually I am tied right now for 3rd in the class, but the last results from yesterday’s event aren't in yet. This last course was stretched out compared to the others. Fast and slow. I mostly just drove in first gear on this course, but I tried second gear on my last run which proved slightly faster. Still learning though so it could have varied on which gear on this last course.

July 11th is the next event. It's at Gwinnett fairgrounds and you have to pre-register at www.myautoevents.com. Adam, you should see how your practice has been paying off. There is a guy, Mark Noyce, who races street tires and has about the same seat time as you. He would be good competition for you.
I can't freaking wait.

That's the weekend several of us are running at Roebling Road but for those that will be around I highly suggest either stopping by and watching glagola1 run (you may even be able to get a ride as a passenger in somebody's car). Or going ahead and driving the course yourself. I haven't done it yet but I know it'll be a load of fun.
We should get somebody to organize getting a group together when these AutoX events take place. Maybe setup a tent with some cool beverages. glagola1, would you want to be the official S2000 Club Autocrosser?
Yep, I am signing up for the SCCA event July 11th, as well as SCCA August 8th, BMW event August 15, and SCCA August 22nd. Damn, August is a busy month. Not sure it I want to drive to the August 1st one though.

Adam, you have to got to LTGP!! It's awesome. It's the coolest auto-x event of the year. Well worth the drive. I raced there 5 days after I bought my car. I had a spring spacer in the right rear shock and bald S02's in early December. That was scary.
Uh, S2kdude, what all is entailed in being the "official club auto-xer"? I always try to get fellow S2K guys out there and I'm at every single local event and even some out of state. Oh, and I will always give a ride-along to fellow S2k dudes if it's not my last run. Hope to meet some of you out there...

Just post online what's going on and when. If you want you can expend some effort organizing the event with other people that want to autocross. Maybe show others in the club why they may want to participate. Post some pictures from the event and so fourth. Not saying you have to do any of that but it's another outlet for people to have fun with thier car.

Sweet, I auto-xed mine at Little Taladega Gran Prix five days after I bought it. It had dry-rotting OEM tires and a spring spacer in the right rear shock. I was confused by the car's handling. On left hand turns the tail was unpredictable and I was amazed by the grip on right hand turns. Damn spring spacer!
Yea, I did a track day at TGP with my old car. 3 days of pounding, it was quite fun....esp. that turn coming off the back straight:)

Man, if people don't bail out of this we should race and then go eat mexican afterwards and make it a mini meet... or something.
Yea, that was me that replied. I don't think people understand how fun a course that is...esp. for an autox. I have already registered. I only have one hold up, but I am trying to work through that right now. I am doing everythign within my power to make it. I want a piece of some Bimmers:)
Edit: Sweet, I should be there. I just took care of my "hold up", so I hope to see you guys there.

It seems that if you join BMWCCA ($40) they have to let you attend. So I forked up the dough, which means I need to attend 8 events to get my money back. I doubt I'll make 7 more events over the next year, but maybe it will be enough incentive to do at least 3 or 4.

blah blah blahI have a long history of disliking SCCA. I was a hard-working member of several chapters over the years, trying to ignore the a-holes that this organization seems to attract. But I got so tired of the back-stabbing and preferential treatment of "favorites" that I gave it up.
In my opinion it's pretty sad to be booted from stock class to prepared for having a different shift knob, but then turn a blind eye to the (stock class) "golden boy" who changes springs AT THE EVENT.
I have attended one SCCA event in the last 10 years, compared to 15 a year the prior 20 years. I may do more in the future, but right now I'm just not in the mood.

Well, I'm truly sorry you feel that way. I really like about 80% of those guys and the other 19% I don't know as well. There is a 1% weenie factor that you can't get around in any situation.
That is sad you got booted from a stock class. That's just rediculous and I can't imagine that happening in the current state of the SoloII adminstration. I'm actually worker co-chief (come see me to get your work assignments) and as an example of the coolness of these guys, we have a guy in an S coming to the next event and he wasn't sure which class he was in since he has 18" wheels but otherwise fits into a stock class. Several people in Team Solo have suggested he enter B-stock even though it's illegal and just let him be aware that he could be protested. That's pretty chill really. Of course he's not putting anyone in points contention at risk.
Anyway, you should come do one and see if things have changed to your liking. I'm very impressed with the efficiency of the organization. I mean, it's impressive to get 200+ entrants 5 runs before 5 pm.
End rant.

My guess is that you'll need to bring your confirmation email to the event, which is what I'm doing. Without your membership number (which you won't get for weeks) they can't tell you from the rest of the slackers.
I had previously asked if they might have a cancellation or a no-show to open up a slot, but Jim Robertson from the bimmer club said those slots would most likely be taken by a walkup member, who are accepted even if the event is full. According to him, once I registered as a member "Im in".
Ahhh, I will be bringing my email then.

If you guys are running stock tires, I'd recomend a pressure of around 39 psi up front and 37 psi in the rear.
I wouldn't worry about it too much though. Just as long as the tires aren't rolling over on to the sidewalls. There are a lot more things to worry about... like driving.:goodjob:

It was cool to meet you guys. Michael, your times were impressive for sure. I think if you liked doing this, you have some potential to get a lot better. I think you were the only S in the 52's and you were knocking on 51's door really hard. That's incredible for a first time auto-xer.
Get some sticky tires and a front sway bar and come give me a run for my money!
Maybe some day....school starts next week(I have 18hrs:( ) so my $$$ flow is going to substantially decline. I ran a 52.0XX(can't remember), I think with one more run I could have been solidly in 51s. There were 3 places or so where I could have been a lot quicker, but that is the way the cookie crumbles.

I think Adam and Sam were both in the low 53's, and this was Sam's first autocross too. I managed to break into the 50's on my 4th run, but don't think I could have made it into the 49's without some tires. The email I got back from the Porsche Club said the cost was $20 or $25 (guess he wasn't sure) and to just show up. They try to get the first car on the course by 10 AM and the run in groups. The Porches have 3 run groups and everyone else gets put in a fourth group. From the sound of it they don't have as many participants as the BMW club did.

Damn, what year was this? I know it wasn't in the last season or this one. You actually spend less time a SCCA event than you do at the PCA or the BMWCCA events because it's broken up into 2 groups, a morning and afternoon. That means you'll be there from 8:30-12:30 or you'll be there from 11:30-4:00 ish and we always get 4 runs and ocassionally 5. If you are totally in love with auto-x you can register for both morning and afternoon and get a bunch of timed runs in.
I don't understand this anamosity for the SCCA events. They are well run and are less of a day eater than the often timer issue plagued PCA and BMW events. Plus, you don't have to do rediculous things like work first and run third with a 1.5hr break of boredom in between.
Anyway, HOLY CRAP, Bob, you got into the 50's??!! Man, that's impressive. Good driving.
Maybe I'll see you guys at Turner on Sunday.

Oh, if you don't feel like buying a trailer, the kumho's can be driven to events. Shoot, I've driven my to Chattanooga and back. No probs.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure I'm going with the Kumho's. Baby steps before moving up to something better. I may get some more neg. camber done too before the event. Income Tax money = sway bar

Not sure - but here's a list of TSB's dealing with mechanical issues. You may be able to find it in there.

I always watch the first event to see how they run it. But since I'm a veteran autocrosser (2 events :D), I probably don't need to check them out first. I'll show up with 40 lbs and $40, maybe I'll run. Also just looked at my rears, they are gooone. Should be better traction with slicks. Right?

40 lbs? What the heck are you talking about? Yeah, they run almost exactly like the BMW events. My rears are gone too but it just makes them more predictable since they break away sooner than fresh S02's.

Absolutely and I highly encourage it. Sign up for class N1 if you want to get there at 8am or class N2 if you want to do the afternoon session. Show up at 11:30 if you want to do that. Just clean the loose items out of your car and show up. You will go pay your 35 smackers and get a work assignment. Then you'll tech your car and either work, run or chill depending on what rungroup you get assigned. We have loaner helmets so you won't really need any gear. Just make sure your tire pressures are all up to spec and even side to side. I usually run even pressures front to rear too.
...and don't worry about being good because you can be a good driver and still not know how to handle an auto-x course. It takes practice. Hopefully, you'll get hooked.

S2000s are A stock (AS) this year. We don't know yet if we're running morning or afternoon because they haven't established the run groups yet, of which there are 4. There are a number of stock classes in each run group. As long as your tires are not corded (your car is tech inspected), you'll be fine.

I think we are running first thing in the morning Tom. Anyway, sign up for N1 which is novice morning. They'll give you numbers and you'll attend a novice drivers meeting. You'll also go on a novice course walk which is pretty helpful. If you sign up for AS which is the stock class for S2k's you'll have to have your own numbers and they can be a pain to make so do novice.
I just signed up for novice morning!!! so how soon do i have to be there to get things started? btw, i don't have new tires. I'll have to burn the stock s02s and I think this day would be the perfect day to completely destroy them...
going to get an alignment done tomorrow with negative camber so hopefully that should help a little bit in terms of getting better traction...(or not since it's too bald :D ) Last time I checked, they're not corded...hopefully they stay like that even during the track day...:)

time for tips!!! c'mon guys...just tell me anything...:DGet there an hour before registration begins. That'll give you plenty of time to settle in. Pump your tires up to 40 lbs. They should have air if you need it but I do it ahead of time. Bald tires are ok, as long as they're not corded. You'll just either slip around a lot or you'll have to go slower.
Speaking of slower, I think that's your key the first couple of times. The biggest mistake first timers make is to try to go like a bat outta hell. Bad mistake. You need to go into the corners slower so the car is settled in the corner and you'll be able to apply power and come out of the corner faster. The old adage is to go slow in the slow parts (coming into sharp corners) and fast in the fast parts (coming out of corners and straights). This is REALLY hard to learn, I still don't do it even though I know it.
To remind me of what's most important to remember I use a BLT (bacon, lettuce and tomato, yumm!) acronym, i.e. Brake early, Look ahead, Tight lines. Brake early (already talked about). Look ahead means just what it says, too look ahead 2, 3 or even 4 turns ahead. It allows you to adjust your speed now and pick the best line for what's ahead. Believe me, this is a learned habit. Tight lines are very important for xcross. Coming in wide with a late turn in and late apex really does not work for xcross (great for Road Atlanta though :D ). Xcross requires tighter lines because the straights are not long enough for the above method to really help you. You have better times taking the shortest route, generally speaking.
Despite me knowing all of the above, I'm still nowhere near 80% of the guys out there. Matt will probably chime in with some good tips and he's alot faster than me, but he does haver R compounds and a front sway (that's my excuse :D) You have to practice in order for it to get imbedded in your brain. I started xcross last year. Buy a book, there's several out there on xcross. See you there!!

I also just registered for Novice morning. Looking forward to seeing you guys out there. From what it looks like, me and this last guy are gonna really make s2000's look bad.Heck no, most everyone there loves S and wish they had one. Just don't push it if it's your first time (read my post above). S's have some bad oversteer, especially on the older models (00 & 01). As a matter of fact, the guys that really have the best times SEEM to be going slow. The guys that are hammering it and spinning their wheels have the worst times. Everyone kinda chuckles to themselves when a new young hot shot goes ramrodding around the course thinking they will have great times. Believe me, they don't. If your squealing the tires around every corner, your doing something wrong!!

Tom, I hate to break this to you but I'm starting to see a different light on the tight lines thing. I think it's time to start opening them up a little. At the last event last year, I had Michael Plummer ride with me and even drive a couple laps. He took some super wide lines through a particular section of offset gates. It seemed to work because I shaved a good amount of time off the next run when I tried it!
So anyway, yeah, keep the lines tight until you get good enough to know where to go wide. I'm not that good yet but that's one of the things I'm going to work on this season.
Now, for tips.... oh boy. Don't get me started. Here's my first tip and it sorta contradicts Tom's approach. Go balls out... that way you'll have fun and also realize that you suck.:) Having fun is the key to your first event since you'll hardly remember what happened and you'll be nervous. You'll know if you want to get good after that. It may not be your thing so don't worry about being good to start off with. Just relish in the fact you're leagally thrashing your badass car for a minute continuously. Relish in the craziness of it all.
But yeah, show up early and hang out. You'll meet some nice people and you'll get a new appreciation for your car.

That's why I said generally speaking on the tight lines. I was going WAY wide at first but now I'm more in the middle of the track. Going wide does make sense if you have a longish straightaway ahead though. IMO
Your tip on going balls out is really funny, because for all my talk of going slow, it's nearly impossible to do! It is REALLY fun to go full crazy out, but when you cross the finish line and see your time it brings you back to reality real quick.
Don't disagree with anything you said! :D Can't wait!

Me and the little lady both signed up for the N1 (hope she doesn't make me look bad by whupin' me). I am not sure we will be running, but since there is no penalty for signing up, I decided to keep our options open. One question, any shortage of loaner helmets? Cost? I didn't want to go shopping before our first event and buy more or less than necessary. Thanks, we are looking forward to getting our feet wet.:)
glagola1

There will be no shortage of loaner helmets. There never is since after your run you return the helmet as you drive back to grid. Also, one of our series sponsors have donated new helmets! That's some great news actually.
The cost to non-SCCA members is 35. If you choose to become a member the fee is 70 bucks (or maybe 75) and the entry fee for that event is waived. So it's like you're getting a member ship for 40. This means that if you do at least 4 more events over the year, you'll make your money back and start to see savings after that since the entry fee for members is 25.

Group clean up thing? What's that? Workers don't clean up anything... they just walk away from their positions when they are done working. The bmw club makes you clean up but not SCCA.
Anyway, I got 3rd in AS which is really dissapointing for me but considering I had to run street tires in the back and dead hoosiers in the front that's not too bad. I got a 47.1 for my timed runs. I was super pleased with my quickest time of 46.0XX when I ran time only later in the day though. That's only .2XX off the first place position in AS of 45.8XX. I cleaned up my lines and took some different one that really helped. I can't wait for the next event and I'm going to have to get some new tires. There were a ton of S's out there. The most badass was the one with the lip and the slight lowering... man it looked good. Was that your's Dan?
gola, sounds like my car...the one with the worst times in the S right :o ?
joe, there was no cleaning up. I did however had to wait a very long time to drive the car for 4 minutes, but that's because I was novice. I was the last group to run. The way you drive, you will make some good times...definately...espeically with the RE050s...:D
I might run novice again next time just to make sure that I would be good enough to at least not put the S into shame running AS class.
David, I'd like to see you out there next time too man...the loudest exhaust at the track was probabaly no louder than my old spugens...so you will definately grab some attention besides from drifting through out the course :goodjob:

I wouldn't worry so much about being last place in AS. You're brand new so that's no big deal. I'm sorry I didn't get to meet you. You've really got me thinking about a front lip now...
The guy who won AS is Mark Noyce. He started last year and drove on street tires the whole year. He learned a lot apparently and this was his first event on race tires. I'm really proud of him (and a little miffed he won! ;)
There is a novice school on May 21. I'll be sure to post up when registration opens. It's garenteed to fill up quick and there are only 40 spots available.

Danny, if you strap some weights to your head durring the daytime, you can build strength in your neck. That'll save you some bucks if you decide to get a cheap heavy helmet.

Oh, there is a Prosolo at gwinnett this weekend coming up. I'll be there but I don't think novices should run it. Too much BS to prepare for. Matt,
We met briefly at the first points event at Gwinnett, I was running novice for the first time (the missus and I both ran our first autoX in the 52-54 sec. range in a bone-stock 2003 and had a great time). Being new to this, can you explain what the National Tour and ProSolo series are all about? I understand Evo is a driving school, correct? I plan on running all the points events I can make it to but I was still wondering what the other events are. Also, I am considering running in A-stock on May 22, is the registration/check-in any different than Novice? Finally, will loaner helmets likely be available at Turner Field next month? Thanks and congratulations on your run during National.
glagola1
04-20-2005, 03:48 PM
Cool, I remember you. Thanks for the congrats. Ok, the National Tour is just that. It's a tour that stops in several cities all across the states. People who are very serious about auto-x travel to compete against a higher caliber of competition. You have to do at least two tour events to be eligible for the final National event in Topeaka, KS. I doubt I'll go this year. The Prosolos are nuts. I did my first just this last weekend. Basically, you have two mirror courses. There is a drag tree start just like at the strip. You line up against somebody in your class and the tree starts the timer. You race one side and you come back and swap to the second side. You get 6 runs per side to set your best combined time. The class winners move on the Super Challenge in which you compete by index against cars in other classes just like bracket drag racing. There's a lot more to it but I don't want to bore you.
I'm glad you're considering running in class next event. We encourage people to switch to their class as soon as possible. There's really nothing different except when you register on line you'll select your class and you can find out when you are running because the class is designated a color and there is a schedule of when that color runs. Dig?
Loaner helmets are always available at all local events and the Evo events are schools. They're tough to get into because they fill up so fast. I've never done one but apparently people learn from them.
See you in May and if you have any more questions please don't hesitate to ask.

great SCCA autocross event yesterday at turner field, test and tune. It was non-stop running all day. I must of done about 30 runs in my s2k, 15 runs in my wife's wrx, and about 15 rides in other's cars. I had Hankook R-S2 tires mounted on the fronts on Friday, and they worked very nicely. I only managed to get 20 miles on them before the autocross, but after a couple of runs, they felt just about as good as the S02s did the a couple of weeks before on the autocross course. My rear S02s are getting low on tread (3000 miles and 3 days of autocross), so I will put the R-S2 tires on the back soon also.
The R-S2 tires are quite cheap, and there is free shipping on them from discountiredirect.com until the 15th. The fronts cost $78 each, and $12 each for balancing from the local discount tire store (free mounting if ordered from discounttiredirect, and they didn't charge any other fees). The rears (245/45-16) are $95 each.
