View Full Version : Camping/Drive at Cheeha Mountain

I was thinking about getting a group together to do a camping trip at Cheeha National Park in Alabama. They have some nice roads and twisties and campgrounds as well. I usually go a few times a year, but I figured it would be more fun now with the S.
Nothing too primative, one of those sites with tables and running water and a bathroom up the hill for the ladies. I usually get by free if no one is checking permits, but I think it runs $12 a site per night, but we can probably get a group rate at the top of the mountain. The scenic route is the drive we would run and I think it streatches about 12-15 miles. Later we would just chill at the camp site and grill out.
I'm thinking late September/early October on a Saturday. Would anybody be interested in doing this?

absolutely, depending on dates -- we've been wanting to do this in the Cloudland Canyon area as well
I might even have my trailer to use by then......

Camping gear in a S2000. Interesting concept. Somebody will have to drive a truck.

Excellent, we have a crowd starting. I'm sure we will need someone to take a truck or something, but maybe someone's other half will volunteer. Firewood is scarce (in a forest of all places) and hauling enough in the S's would be out of the question.
Lets say (tentatively speaking) that Sept. 25-26 or Oct 2-3 or Oct 9-10 are our choices. I think it's far enough from dragon ball, but not too close to the track day so things aren't squished together. Let's post which weekends people would be able to make it and pick the one that most people can attend. If we get a group going, I'll call the mountain and get things organized.

I was wondering exactly how this was going to work myself! We had his sentra trunk full of gear, how is that going to fit in the S?

You guys are carrying WAY too much gear if you can't fit your stuff into your trunk...
Then again, I'm just carrying enough for one person...
...and I suppose my Special Forces background has taught me how to do without a lot of the "extras"...

we were car camping in the sentra, backpacking gear is different of course....a lot less and everything is smaller/lighter

Car Camping? Now there's a new term...
...is that like roughing it in the Holiday Inn?;)

no.......true camping, as you well know Doc......involves a hike and backpacks to hual the essentials one needs to survive
car camping is a step beyond the backyard camping experience of youth, wherein all the stuff you hauled from the house to the back yard is now placed in one's trunk and hauled too a "woodsy" location that often affords restroom and outdoor cooking facilities. (my last car camping experience involved me [1] parking [2] stringing my hand made hammock between a couple trees and [3] mooching at other people's camp fires)

not new actually, though one you wouldn't have heard in your special forces circle. No, it's roughing it but with stuff like: a cooler, regular size sleeping bags and tent, lantern, camping stove, paper plates and cups, etc., just means you drive your car up to where you camp instead of backpacking into the site. I love to camp but I have less small backpacking stuff than I do car camping stuff. I wouldn't want to try to get my camp stove, lantern and sleeping bag into my backpack and carry it. ;)
Note: my car camping experiences have not included the luxury of bathrooms or cooking areas.
Joesph, please clarify what type of camping we'll be doing....if it's backpacking we need to go buy some things...like a tent that will actually fit in our packs and is light enough to carry.

I don't know about you guys, but the thought of hiking AWAY from my car in the woods is a bad idea. Definitely "car camping" as the dynamic duo puts it. The differences are as follows:
Camping: Bring ax and chop wood.
Car Camping: Bring wood
Camping: Carry camel water pack and extra cantine.
Car Camping: Carry cooler of beer.
Camping: Bring canned and easily prepared food that doesn damage easily.
Car Camping: Bring second cooler full of beef (all varieties).
Camping: Pack magnesium strips and lighter/matches to start camp fire.
Car Camping: Use leftover bags/paper/and any garbage in car for kindling.
Camping: Pack lightly ensuring you can carry the essentials with you.
Car Camping: Pack everything you like to eat just incase you can't decide.
Camping: Limit foods and items that have packaging materials that need to be disposed of.
Car Camping: Before you leave, throw all your trash and leftovers in the fire and watch the flames change colors.
That's pretty much it. It also would hurt to bring some cards, board games, etc. they usually have a grill there, but I like to bring my mini propane grill and use the campfire area just for the fire.

What are you campng in now...the Taj Mahal?
Wait...don't tell me...you're carrying a 10-person tent for two people maybe? :D
