View Full Version : Driving on 400 this weekend
This was just sent to me by a co-worker:
Weekend construction is scheduled on GA 400 between Holcomb Bridge Rd. and Windward Pkwy. EXTREMELY HEAVY DELAYS are expected in both directions between I-285 and McFarland Rd. Motorists are advised to avoid GA 400 north of I-285 from 9 pm Friday until 5 am Monday and use alternate routes. Those using GA 400 can expect hours-long delays in reaching their destination.
The following is a message issued today by the Georgia Department of
Transportation regarding construction on Georgia 400.
Dear Community Partner:
Please be aware, over this coming weekend, there will be lane
closures associated with the Georgia DOT Georgia State Route 400
project in Fulton County that will cause major delays.
Beginning on Friday, 11/10/06 at 9 pm until Monday, 11/13/06 at 5 am,
Georgia DOT contractors will work to re-stripe new northbound lanes
between Holcomb Bridge Road and Windward Parkway. This work will
require lane closures, traffic shifts, periodic traffic stoppage and
pacing. DOT will close both the Norcross and Roswell exit ramps of GA
400 North at Holcomb Bridge on Friday night continuing into Saturday.
Motorists are strongly encouraged to avoid travel on GA 400 north of
Interstate 285 throughout the weekend. All GA 400 traffic, both
north and southbound, will be extraordinarily heavy. Multi-mile
northbound back-ups are expected. (Northbound drivers desiring to
exit either eastbound or westbound at Holcomb Bridge will be directed
to proceed to the Mansell Road exit and return southbound to Holcomb
Bridge.)
By Monday morning, it is expected that the work will be complete and
the six-mile section of GA 400 NB between Holcomb and Windward will
have four travel lanes open to the public. At that time, the outside
(right) shoulder which has been used as a temporary travel lane
during construction will be closed; it later will be reopened
exclusively for emergency vehicles and GRTA and MARTA buses during
designated periods of heavy traffic.

Dammit, thanks for posting that, I was going to go up to see how my house was going.... I'll pass now.Isn't the new house off exit 17? Take Hwy 20 out to 400 and then go north. You'll hit 400 north of Windward Pkwy, exit 15 I think.

It's only two lanes where I get on 400 now, at Old Milton, so that part will help. It's already 4 lanes past H Bridge, and it still gets backed up there some. :(
I hope it really helps. Of course, I have to go to the airport Sunday morning and I'll be taking P'tree Parkway and 85 to get there.

The downside is that I have to work off 400 both Saturday and Sunday. Anyone have any backroads to get to alpharetta hwy near holcomb bridge from Virginia Highlands?

I live off of Exit 10. I can't wait for the new lanes to open up so I can speed with even more ease. :drive: It's hard to go over 100 MPH when you only have two lanes and velor fitted soccer moms in their Tahoe's are randomly crossing lanes unexpectedly while drinking their Starbuck's mocha latte's.

Sandy Springs police target speeders
Staff reports
Published on: 11/10/06 Nine Sandy Springs police officers will canvas Ga. 400 and I-285 on Friday, ticketing drivers who speed, drive aggressively and make improper lane changes.
"It's not about [creating] revenue, it's not about speed traps, it's about slowing people down," said Sandy Springs police Chief Gene Wilson.
"We're averaging more than 600 to 800 accidents a month inside the city limits of Sandy Springs," Wilson added.
"People who are saying it's a speed trap have no idea the number of accidents we're having, the injuries and the congestion it creates ... enough is enough."
Since the 86-officer Police Department started in July, it's been praised by residents who cited increased crime and insufficient law enforcement as one of the top reasons they wanted to incorporate.
During its first month, the department made 337 arrests and issued 2,847 citations. That's compared to 157 arrests and 766 citations issued by Fulton County police in June, the last month it patrolled the area.
Wilson said he expects to have these traffic crackdowns two to three times a month.

And how much congestion did they save by doing this and how many accidents? I can pretty much guarantee you that the speeders cause about 1% of the accidents on 285. It's the people putting on their makeup and talking on the phone and eating breakfast in traffic that cause the problem. Twenty bucks says that if they just pulled people over for not obeying the basic rule of "keep right except to pass" that the problems would be cut in half. I hate how they always ignore the real issues and just blame it on the speeders. Of course, with a speed limit of 55mph, who isn't speeding?

I see an accident nearly every day on Roswell Road in Sandy Springs from people trying to make left turns in to businesses. I'm one of them myself - my last car was totaled by someone running a light. (yeah, I ran it too, technically and since I was making a left I was listed as fault)
That's where the enforcement should be, even though it would end some of my fun. :D

Buffy and I decided to go see the house anyway, traffic wasn't an issue at all, I guess people stayed away if they could.
