Now every time one of them decides to jump out of the ocean and stab someone, there's going to be a national headline about it.

Okay - good tip. If you get stabbed in the heart by a stingray, leave it there.

That's why doctors tell you to never remove the object in an impalement. Most of the time, the object the person is impaled with acts as a plug and actually stops you from bleeding to death.

It's very possible that if Steve Irwin had not pulled the barb out, he would still be alive today.

I suspect he was already mortally wounded. The barb would have already been partially withdrawn by the stingray and snapped off during that point. If it was still down very deep near the heart, it would have been almost impossible for him to pull out, especially since stingray venom is extremely painful (people have boiled their skin off trying to break down the venom with hot water because the pain of scalding yourself is less than the pain of the venom).
