That's the one that has a parachute:

I still think there's more to the story.

Those are great planes, but the parachute only works if you can navigate around the obstacles.

The Cirrus has an alarmingly high crash rate... Most people that I've run into at the various FBO's (I'm a private pilot) think that the Cirrus SR20/22 is like the old Bonanza of the 70's - it was nicknamed "The Doctor Killer". It's a pretty demanding airplane to fly and the parachute gives people a false sense of security. Most people don't realize that if you pull the chute, the aircraft will be a total loss when it hits the ground. Of course you will survive, but your insurance agent won't be too happy that you just totalled a $400k airplane.

...which is excatly why its called the "Doctor Killer" and not the "Corporate Middle Manager Killer"

I have a good friend who has a Cirrus on order that is already mostly paid for, every time I talk to him he seems more convinced to sell it when he gets it.

Oh definitely. Money to buy the plane, no time to dedicate to flying it :D But what's interesting with this accident is that he was getting checked out in the Cirrus with a flight instructor. I can't imagine what could have gone wrong that the instructor couldn't have handled. And why the heck would you be flying over Manhattan in the first place? I don't know, call me crazy...

I, too, am suspicious of a "training flight" in Manhatten.

If it's the SR20, I'd tell him to look at the Diamond DA-40. Similar specs and available with the G1000 glass panel. If he has an SR22 on order, I'd look seriously at the Lancair 350 or 400...
