For those that were interested in what to get for the next drive, here's what I'd recommend:
A set of Motorola Talkabout 5950's. Up to a 5 mile range (if you use the GMRS channels) and there's a $15 rebate on the Motorola website.

While your at it, if you need to hear with the top down you'll need a headset, the Motorola 53725 works great and is only $15 list.

You just like them becuase they match your car.......just kidding! I just purchased a set from Best Buy, with only a 3 mile range for $34.00. They worked great. In the mountains you will never get a 5 mile range anyways. Headset makes all of the difference.

The maximum range of any of these transmitters is across open water. Not like Lake Lanier, like the ocean. But it is the maximum, and makes for good copy.

The 5 mile range is if you use the 1 watt GMRS channels. We typically don't use those channels on drives because most people only have radios with FRS channels which are only allowed to transmit at 0.5 watt.
Yes, range is probably tested at sea level on flat, open terrain with no other RF emissions. Which is to say the range is theoretical since those conditions really don't exist.

If haven't bought yours yet, get the GMRS, it is compatible with the FRS ones, but my esperience is that often (like on the ski slopes) all the FRS channels are pretty busy. The added range and the extra channels of GRMS is worth it.
I have an older set of FRS talkabouts. Is the range on these sufficient on mountain drives to be able to communicate with the group? Or is an upgrade necessary?

The T6210's work fine on the drives, you should have no problem. If you don't have a 53725 headset I'd recommend getting one. You'll be able to hear everyone and they'll be able to hear you.
