Just recently I only seem to be getting 200 miles per tank of gas. Previously I was getting between 220-230 between full ups, so I don't if I'm just drving differently or if it's something else. I'm going to go with the theory that I'm just driving differently. What do you reckon?
FYI - My daily commute to work is 10 miles all back roads with an average of 30-35mph.

I average right around 200 miles per tank. Lots of stop and go traffic.

I'm with DoctorT, under normal street driving I've never stopped for gas before the 250 mi mark and can squeeze out as much as 300 on a tank if I'm on the highway a lot.

Yeah, definately. I would say that for me vtec kicks in everytime I pull away from lights, stop signs, etc.

Lee, can't believe you get only 200 miles per tank going 30-35!! Must be that SLOW vteching from stop lights! :D
I've noticed my mileage per tank is all over the board. Variables that I think affect my mileage in descending order would be: 1. Amount of vteching, 2. Brand/octane of gas, 3. Number of people/cargo in boot :), 4. Letting my son drive my car, :D 5. Temperature and humidity, 6. Leaving the parking brake on, :D (yes, I'm guilty too!!). I've gotten 300 miles on the highway to as low as 200 in everyday driving. Usually get between 230-250 though.
Speaking of miles per tank, how many miles do you estimate you still have after you go to no bars?? I figure I have 2 gallons or about 40 miles left. When the car starts hesitating I know I need gas, but have never run out. Anybody know if you run out can you restart and get to a gas station, or are you sol?? My last car you could run out of gas but could always restart and drive to a gas station.

Maybe there's a Govt. conspiricy to get me to buy more gas.
I've been caught out too many times playing the "wonder if I can make to the next gas station" game so I usually fill up at 1 bar. My prediciment may have something to do with varying brands over the last couple of months instead of sticking with the local QT station that I usually use.

Me too. Not sure what's wrong with YOUR car. I'm always at about 6k - 7k (or higher) when shifting through 1st and 2nd. If I shift below 5k it's not as smooth.
One time, on the way to work, traffic was moving slow so I tried keeping the RPM's below 4k, after about 5 min. of bordem I couldn't stand it anymore and had to ease back and wind it out to redline. Most mornings I see triple digits on the speedo (if I get a clear path on this one stretch of road). Not sure why I never have to fill up before 260 miles or so. The only time I've had to fill up sooner was the trackday.

My last car you could run out of gas but could always restart and drive to a gas station.I once hit 340 miles on one tank but that was pre-SC. Now I rarely get 300.
My "low fuel" light comes on at 2 bars. Once I hit 0 bars I usually have 2.5 gallons left in the tank, so that's a good 50 miles for me (26mpg).
Some information gleened from running out of gas 4 times (once on a race track):
1. The fuel pickup is on the driver's front side of the tank, so you are more likely to 'prematurely sputter' going uphill. Downhill the fuel comes back (just when you don't need it).
2. Normally there are no ill effects from running out of gas, though if it happens on long stretches of level road the engine will mis-fire often enough to cause the CEL to come on. It will normally clear once you fuel up and cycle the ignition.
3. Unless you are going downhill, you can't get the last .5 to .6 gallons out of the tank. My first out-of-gas experience I didn't pay attention, but the last 3 I did and could never put more than 12.6 gallons in the tank before it overflowed.
4. If you do run out of gas going uphill, try to pull over and get the car level or pointed downhill. If you leave it uphill, it may take more than a gallon to fill the tank enough to reach the pickup (i.e. 2 trips to the gas station with the 1 gal can). Once you do get fuel in the tank, cycle the ignition "ON for 5 seconds, OFF for 5 seconds" about 10 times. The fuel pump is forced to run for a few seconds each time you first turn the key ON, so severaly cycles of this will eventually pump fuel to the injectors. If you try to crank up without doing this, it may take a minute or so of cranking to get fuel to the injectors, and the starter shouldn't be run for more than about 20 seconds at a time. (several minute cool down)

As for the brand of gas it all comes from the same distribution center, the only difference in any of them is the last bit of additives that are put in the tanker, probably less then 1/10 of 1% of the gas is additives which, for the most part, are more a marketing thing than a change in reliability or performance. For Atlanta, one of the DC's are off of Bufurd Hwy & I-285. Near Butler Tire.
Now I do notice a difference in milage when every I used gas that was part methonal or "oxygenated" (whatever that means). Some stations in NC or up in the Northern states will change the formulation, supposed to have some positive impact on the environment (whatever).

Too serious. Premium is for wimps, switch to Toluene...plus you can run about 40-50psi of boost. Ahh, the old Formula 1 days.

First, wow, 300 miles to a tank! That is amazing.
Then, is the fuel pump in the tank? If so, then it is a good practice to fill up at 1/4 of a tank. The reasoning is that the fule cools the pump and you don't want to let the pump heat up because of loss of coolant (gas).
But if the pump isn't in the tank.... Never Mind (Loraine Newman)

I believe the fuel pump is in the tank. It will stay cool as long as it's pumping gas. If it's not pumping gas you are not going anywhere. So I think filling up at 1/4 tank is not necessary but you may not want to run out of gas if you can help it.

Will the pump Cavitate without fuel? If it cavitates will it stay cool? I have been curious about this for some time.

I read something on s2ki.com that if you ran out of gas and went to put a gallon in that you would have to turn your key switch about 10X to force the pump to pump the gas through to the car before you actually start it.

Ok, this is from Tom & Ray, and I don't always agree with them...
The liquid around the pump heat sinks the motor's heat. Heat is THE enemy to a motor (this is from me, I'm an EE). So as long as the pump is covered with fuel, you get that cooling.
But on the other hand, I have not heard of anyone who has had a bad pump. So, maybe I shouldn't have entered the fracus.

I checked with my Service dudes (Bells Ferry Service). They replace a lot of Honda fuel pumps.
They don't know why a pump goes bad. And they do not remember changing an S-2000 pump. But they only service two.
I was looking for an outside opinion. And kind'a got one.
