The one time I was glad not to be in my S -- very scary experience following "TomTom" today - ended up on a scary road in a car that apparently doesn't have 4 wheel drive - and with my roommate who - while he says knew how to get out of the mess - um...I'm thinking that if he knew about 1st gear he wouldn't have slid halfway down the hill before putting the car back in gear...;)

------------------------------------------------------------
A Different World
Bucky Covington

We were born to mothers who smoked and drank
Our cribs were covered in lead based paint
No child proof lids no seat belts in cars
Rode bikes with no helmets and still here we are, still here we are
We got daddy’s belt when we misbehaved
Had three TV channels you got up to change
No video games and no satellite
All we had were friends and they were outside, playin’ outside

Chorus
It was a different life
When we were boys and girls
Not just a different time
It was a different world

School always started the same every day
The pledge of allegiance then someone would pray
Not every kid made the team when they tried
We got disappointed and that was all right, we turned out all right

Chorus

Bridge
No bottled water, we drank from a garden hose
And every Sunday, all the stores were closed

Chorus x2

It was a different world

I was taking my morning constitutional at the office today when someone else walked in restroom. I did the customary throat clearing technique which informs the new arrival that the stall is occupied.

This got me thinking about where this custom came from. Is it a learned behavior, instinct, or evolution? I wondered if it was around before bathrooms were. Like when a caveman was taking a deuce behind a rock back in the day, did he grunt like a mofo to let other cavemen know that they shouldn't come about? Since you are pretty vulnerable when squeezing one out, perhaps the grunt was more like a menacing growl to deter would be predators from tearing you a new one mid squat.

Since we don't have to worry about a triceratops ramming a horn up our arses any more, I think we have moved on to another derivative; the sniff. Perhaps this is a more evolved version of the throat clear/grunt/growl, that still lets other would be turd burglars know you are not to be trifled with.

Sadly, this will probably be the best thinking I will do all day.

the radius to circumference ratio is always pi.... you can try it on anything

math final next wednesday and that isn't a fact that i need!

okay, so let's see you draw a square where each side is pi. Where do you stop your pencil exactly?

or you could just change the value of pi like the Indiana legislature tried once...

I have a canon xti and i only have the kit lens (18-55mm). i'm leaving out of country to visit korea, Philippines, maybe japan or china. beautiful cities/scenary etc. so i want a decent lens to carry around and take all the pics i could.

what would be best for this? a lot of city shooting, mtn. scenary etc., (mainly outdoor shooting). I'm looking to spend around $3-500. maybe slightly more. i've looked and considered the following:

Canon EF 50mm F1.8 II SLR Lens -52mm

Canon 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 USM IS
Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM (no IS)

what other comparable lenses are avail. within the price range? any suggestions?

-Q-
04-30-2007, 06:53 PM
Of all those, the 28-135 would probably be the most versatile. While i *love* my 50mm, it's a prime lens only and thus will feel a bit "restrictive" for some shots (especially when you're too close or too far away from the subject). As a walkaround, i'd suggest the 28-135.

The 70-200 is too much for walkaround, imo. In all honesty though, the kit lens really isn't all that bad...

50mm is only like $70. My only reason for it is the advantage of taking pics without busting flash under low-light/ night conditions, handheld.

i too was thinking 28-135 would be the most suitable, but is it really $500 good?

You might consider renting a lens from a camera shop. It's a good way to try out lenses before you buy them since some are so expensive.

I think I'm going to go get a bacon pig cheeseburger cow. With a side of tuna fish.

Just don't go to some trendy Atlanta restaurant. They are so crowded that no one goes there anymore.

I live in Athens. That's too far to go for a burger. And it was a joke about redundancy. But now I am hungry. Damn.

I got it! My quote was a joke too, though not exactly a redundancy, it's a quote from the king of redundant quotes: Yogi Berra

I just had a semi embarrasing moment. I see a guy in the hallway who looks familiar, so I do the ol' "Hey! How's it going man?" thing before realizing that I've never seen this person before in my life.

As we shook hands, I guess I had a bit of a puzzled or bewildered look on my face because he says, "I'm not who you thought I was, huh?".

"No, you're not, but you look familiar." I said. We got a bit of a laugh out of it, then he continues, "It's ok, I get that all time."

Regretably, this isn't the first time I have made this mistake but one common denominator to these instances is that 90% of the time, the person says, "It happens all the time.", or something to that effect. The person could look like a Klingon hooker and will still say "it happens all the time".

I think they may be lying because it never happens to me. I just find it odd that someone would lie to me, just to make me feel better. Kind bastards.

I've gotten a lot of this lately:

At WTD, 2 weeks ago, a guy hit me in the shoulder as he was walking by. Then he realized I wasn't who he thought I was. We were all there as S2000 owners, so we laughed it off.

Then the next day or so, I'm walking down Peachtree Street and have to stop at a cross-walk and notice a lady across the street waving at me. I did that oh so inconspicuous look behind me to see if there was someone there, but no, she was waving at me. Then she realized I wasn't who she thought I was and she immediately turned and broke off eye contact.

It was too bad it wasn't some hot chick. I would have loved to had walked up to her, given her a hug (and/or kiss) and see how long I could keep a straight face.

I was driving to work today and on my street, a guy was walking his golden retriever. I just so happened to be driving by at the point where the dog was in the middle of going poopie. Lucky me!

Anyway, the guy was watching his dog. I mean watching intently. The angle was such that I could see the guy's face clearly and he had a look of neither amusement nor indifference. It was more of a blank zombie-like stare. He didn't even let the fact that a car was driving by distract him from nature's course happening right in front of him. It was then I realized that whether the owner knew it or not, he was burning that image into his mind.

If he has a near death experience today, where his life flashes before his eyes, I'll bet that one of the images that dances across his conscience is his dog taking a dump. To mess with my head even more, I realized that due to a misfortune in timing, if I have a near death experience, I too will probably see somewhere in that collage of images a random dog taking a random dump. Life is weird.

My burned image:

Last week on my way into work, right out of my complex I had a Ford 500 that was in front of me. When we get to the end of the street, the driver stops at the stop sign to turn left. Me, turning right, have to wait for him. It is then that I realize that the driver of the Ford is sporting quite a nice Mullet. Like most people that are turning left onto a main throughway, he was looking left and right to look for a break in the traffic. Normally this would be unpostworthy, but the gentleman doing this was turning his head with so much force that the non-business end of his Mullet was flung from shoulder to shoulder. So for next 30 seconds I got the amusement of seeing the repetitive flinging of hair, from left to right to left to right to left... During that time, I considered the action I would take (slowly acting it out) and couldn't see why I would need to turn my head that hard to look left then right. Maybe that's a benefit of Mullet ownership?
