View Full Version : That Pesky Plastic Window

Just wondered. A while back, I saw a posting about putting a towel in the top when it was folded down. Cleaning my window yesterday most of the scratches were on the inside.
Just what are the rest of y'all doing to preserve that pesky plastic window?

To remove scratches you can use 3M or Meguire's Plastic Cleaner and Plastic Polish. When I had a plastic back window I did the two step process (cleaner then polish) about every three months. Use Plexus weekly or whenever you clean the window. Plexus is also good for the guages and the windscreen.

I researched that stuff. It is a plastic preservative. It doesn't remove scratches. What I use is Meguiar's polish for plastic windows. Does a pretty good job but the scratches just keep coming back.

I also had a Muz mat in the rear window well and used a rolled up towel and put it between the layers of plastic and the top when putting the window down. When I traded my 2001 in the window was perfect, no scratches.

right -- more accurately -- the last time the 3 of us discussed properly cleaning the rear plastic in MY car (over 1 year ago), was it not a product by the name of Plexus, or at least a name sounding similar to that in pronunciation?
the question appears to have been answered in a later post by S2k Dude

Sorry, but I don't know what a Muz mat is...
Worse is that I need a little more explanation of what will cushion the plastic. Did you put a mat on the deck it folds down on? Did you stuff a towel between the plastic fold as it went down?
Just a little more explanation, please?

Just a little more explanation, please?Yes, a Muz mat is what sits on the deck where the top is folded down. The towel is just placed in the crease of the plastic when as it is being put down.

Muz has good products, floor mats, window protector, mat for the window well. He gives a discount also so check out his website and place and order, just don't be in too much of a hurry to get your merchandise since it's shipped all the way from "the land down under."

I've got the muz mat and the trunk organizer if anyone wants to buy them. The organizer is cool but I can't use it because my bowling bags are too tall and won't fit with it installed.

Already have the Muz mat. Give up the details on the trunk organizer. I know what it looks like, just need to know what color you have. And of course...the really important question...how much?

Hahhahaaa, you guys are funny.... It would take more effort for me to get it out of there than it is worth. You could probably put anything down there and not see it, hell, I forgot for awhile I even had the thing down there.
Make sure whatever you put down that you secure it, the mat came with velcro or something like that on it so it doesn't shift and get folded up..

When I had my 2001 my wife made me a "window crease preventer" out of some fabric she sewed together and filled with some bean bag material. The trick was that it also had a "tail" to prevent the top from scratching into the plastic window and from rolling off the car when I put the top up.

I'd really be interested in further explantations of this. Sounds like a project.
Can you describe it more in detail?
S2k Dude
06-05-2004, 11:47 AM
It's a good little project. The fabric store had some material that was a soft cloth with a foam backing about 1/8" thick. Cut to a width greater than the back window and a length about 18" long. Roll the first 1/3 and sew the edge down, then sew the end to make a tube with about a 12" "tail". Stuff it with poly pelets or even old socks (preferably clean ones) and sew the other end closed. Now you have a back window protector.
When putting down the top, stop the retraction 1/2 way and put in the protector in the valley that's created when the plastic window begins to fold. The tail should lay toward the trunk to put a layer of material between the exterior of the top and the clear plastic window.
I've not seen one like I describe being sold online but it's not too hard to make yourself.
Hope that helps.

I am not sure if that question was asked to me, but I don't think the color matters because it will be folded into the top. What do you think?
