View Full Version : Painting Calipers
I am thinking very seriously about painting my brake calipers (red). I thought I would also swith my brake pads out for ceramic while in the process. Mainly for brake dust reasons and maybe get a bump in performance as well.
I was looking at the paint kit and pads on TireRack.com. Althought the paint sets in two hours they say not to drive for 24, so it sounds like something I am going to have to do at home rather then a tech day.
Any suggestions, recomendations, or comments? I will be hitting someone up for instructions on changing the brake pads...

the calliper paint is easy, but it will need to take a good day to cure
there's a good write up w/ pix on S2Ki, I'm sure Cyclon has a link to it in the DIY section
Cyclon36 and Decker have painted calipers themselves, I bet they can chime in on this.
Seeing Decker's red calipers on his Silverstone made me want red ones too, I think that may be my next mod now that my headlights are cleared. :)

Yeah, I did mine and love the result. There is a link in the how to section. I did grind mine down so they were smooth and look extra nice. If you want to see a mint pair of red calipers, look at yellows2k's (craig). You can eat off his calipers. It shows how nice they turn out when you do it right. I painted mine black to be subtle.

I've thought about painting mine but with a blue car - you can't paint them red...or light gray... or white... black is subtle though hardly noticeable as it is dark in there already - I've even considered some color of dark blue... just not sure.
Deb's cousin has a powder coating shop in Houston - maybe if that's an option - we could put together a package of stuff we want done and get a group rate... anyoneknow how much 1000 pounds of brake calipers would cost to fedex back and forth...

The most important thing to remember when you paint the calipers is to make sure they are clean. Very clean. After all of the grinding to smooth them out, spray them down with braker cleaner.

I used a local powdercoater for my intake. he charged me $40 to clean and powdercoat the intake. I'm sure if we get enough people together, he'll be willing to do our brakes depending on what we want done. I was thinking about doing this myself since event the ceramic paint gets dull when you're pushing 850F on the track.
S2k Dude
08-22-2005, 10:32 AM
I'd be interested but in order to powdercoat you need to take the entire caliper apart, clean it, powdercoat, and reassemble.
Rick's was charging something like $250 for this (with core exchange).
Maybe we can find a one or two sets of 4 used calipers, have them powdercoated, then do the swap for one or two cars at a time.
Only mods are usually much less painful.
Unless you screw them up.:D

Thanks to everyone for the great info! I will probably go the cheaper route because I may have to undo the work someday. I will smooth them out before painting though. I'll check out the "How To" and also with you (Joe) at dinner on Thurs for the details. I'm assuming I can do it with my Dremel and the right attachment.
As far as the decals (Thanks, Dave), I'm still up in the air. If I do put them on I was thinking maybe white "Honda" rather than "S2000"? I haven't seen enough to know if I would like it. Anyone have any opinions (like I need to ask ;-)?
Also, Thanks Doug, for offering info on changing the pads. I'll be talking to you...

Dremel will take you forever, if you want a really slick shine, you need a grinder. Also, once you do it, you can't go back to stock. I'm sure if you just paint them black before you turn it in, they'll never know though.

I polished mine with a dremel. Spent about 8 hours total. Make sure you've got some dust masks and safety glasses for that and wear old clothes.
If you get the epoxy paint from Decal girl don't mix it all at once (or in anything plastic). I have done 2 coats and will do 1 more before I put the stickers on. The paint came in before the SS lines and new pads so I wanted to change them out and then put the last coat on.
Now I just need time.

i did mine without grinding, you can take a look at them, they look really nice. I did put like 6 coats on them, when they set the enamel will smooth out and stretch and look really nice. saves the time of grinding.
i've done 3 G2 paint kits, never had a problem with fade or anything. Got this latest one from decal girl. after about 4 hours you can drive it, but "EASY" with the brakes. Since mine was mostly highway it was cool.

i'm not sure what everyone beleive are good caliper colors for their car colors. I think the following
Red Body = yellow
Silver = red
yellow = red
black = yellow,red,blue(with gunmetal rims)
white = red,blue,black
what do you guys think?

It occurs to me - i have an old sandblaster that we could put glass beads in and blast the calipers clean. Glass beads also shine and smooth whatever they hit as opposed to using aluminum oxide - which will clean but leave a roughened surface. I use the A/O on small things i need to paint - which works great. Glass beads are a quick and dirty way of polishing things. In fact if the result is good enough - you could just put a clear coat on the calipers - like shiney metal - but not chrome.
Let me know if this would be helpful and I'll dig it out of storage.
To use it we'd need to have an air compressor - if no one else has one - i have one but would need help getting it into the truck to take wherever the paint meet would be held. Just a thought.

You guys should plan a spend the night party for this. By the time you get everybody's calipers sanded or blasted or whatever and wait long enough for the paint to cure so you can drive on them is going to take more than a day. This is something that should atleast dry overnight. If you don't, the second you drive you, you'll be bombarding your freshly painted calipers with brake dust that might become permanent if the paint is too soft. Remember, the brakes get hot even if you don't use them alot.

i used a 90deg gringer, with red scotchbright pad. then i used hi-temp ceramic paint from auto zone (red) then put on silver s2000 decal (decal girl) then hightemp ceramic clear coat. all were spray can paint. ps. i noticed that the clear needs to be applied as soon as posible, or it will start to crack base coat or wrinkle. so after painting base color wait unitl the paint is just dry enough to apply sticker then apply clear coat.

Everyone's a critic...
To be honest they're Lilac, or Lavender if you prefer. I think you've got to have a Sebring S to pull off the Pink but, if you insist...

Me too. I also have no orange on the car. I need to find a pic or take one that shows my cleared lights/sidemarkers and has stock wheels.
I swiped this from s2ki, it's a better representation of my car. Not exact, I know, but it was the closest thing I found quickly.

:rolf: So true! You know what I'm going to say....do the pink girl!! It would look awesome. A hotter pink caliper but nicely done(not rice color/quality) would be awesome. I say go for it. If I had an S it would be: #1 choice-fast and furious pink car with my anime #2-total opposite-Silverstone with pink accents. Please do it so I can vicariously live through you!! We don't have a girlie car in the group.....we need one.

no offense to the master.......but that looks red, not pink........
I can't find pink hi-temp paint and I'm afraid of not having it all match if I have to mix more than one batch.
Then I'd want matching badges too.... maybe I need to find the perfect pink in nail polish so I can have more things done to match... shift boot, seat inserts.... :D
I'll disagree with you on the F&f car, that's too much for me.

In every other case I'd agree with you regarding how riced out it looks. I have seen that body kit in person in silverstone and HATED it because it was too much. I absolutely HATE riced out cars but for some reason I LOVE that F&f pink car.....maybe it's the pink furry seats and just all the pink, I don't know. It's sensation overload of pink and I want it.

Back to topic, how does the first weekend of October sound for those who want a caliper weekend?
Everyone would need to bring their own paint, jackstands, and party supplies. Not sure what else...
I want to get some feedback here, then I'll post an event thread.

G2 red caliper paint. The G2 system is probably your best bet with any color.
