The Ferrari 360 Challenge:
There are good reasons why the Ferrari Challenge, now in its 11th year, has remained popular. Drivers race the newest Ferrari sports cars, but the rules require that the cars be prepared to identical specifications. This allows driver talent and skill to determine the winners, rather than rewarding those who spend the most money to modify their cars. The most important changes between the Ferrari 360 Modena you’ll see on the road and those in the Challenge involve safety. With the recognition that accidents can occur in racing, Challenge drivers are protected by special racing seats and safety harnesses, and full “roll cages,” special tubular structures surrounding the driver’s compartment. Just like their professional counterparts, Challenge drivers wear special fire-proof racing suits and crash helmets.
These aren’t professional racers, though; the “pros” are specifically excluded from the Challenge. Challenge drivers are “average” Ferrari owners, if there is such a thing. They’re mostly businessmen and women, professionals such as doctors and lawyers, with a sprinkling of retirees, students, and even a rocket scientist.
All preparation and maintenance of the Challenge Ferraris is carried out by authorized Ferrari dealers. Technicians who work on road-going Ferraris during the week become race mechanics on weekends, with skills rivaling the best professionals.
The appeal of the Ferrari 360 Modena Challenge to these people is easy to describe. This unique racing series allows them to escape their real-world responsibilities for a bit, and instead focus on a gratifying hobby.
Unlike any other type of event, these cars -- and their drivers -- are approachable in the paddock. This unique sharing of these Ferrari’s sights and sounds and smells, both on and off the track, make the 360 Challenge a special and intimate way to experience the world’s finest racing automobiles.
See you there!
