I will be doing a pre run for the January drive this Sunday the 9th. If you are interested in tagging along, sound off so I'll know. Pre-runs consist of backtracking, getting lost, and just plain exploring. Meeting time will be 9:30 in the parking lot behind Frankies (where we have the Tuesday meets) and we will leave as soon as everyone arrives so If you want to come along, be sure to post or PM me so I know who's coming. For directions, check the tuesday night meet thread.

This is open to all cars/passengers/bikes/tagger alongers.

no, this is a pre-run for an entirely new route. There are some other roads further to the east I'd like to try and explore.

Just define things a little more, we will leave Toosy's at 11am. I will be there at 10:30 waiting for people. Don't forget your radios.

Ok, big changes. The forcast jumped up to 80% chance of rain all of a sudden for saturday. I pushed the pre-run off to Sunday at same time/place and deleted the responses for the saturday drive. Please sound off if you plan on going.

I also just got new sticky kum-ho's mx's on thursday $608 out the door with everything but the alighnment. ( nitrogen in tires, 130mph on car ballenceing, silver vavle stems.) membership has its privliges at butler tire in doraville.

Mine were fill with nitrogen a couple weeks ago when i bought them.

I can't say I noticed any difference but supposedly the reasons behind it is that normal air finds it way out of the tire faster than nitrogen so you don't have to check so often and that itself may cause more wear on tires if the pressures don't stay up.

Figured that was a maybe for saturday, wanted fresh responses for Sunday.

Too bad that you're not feeling so Good Jesse. Hope you get better.

any downside other than availability?Nitrogen apparently doesn't deteriorate the rubber like O2 does so you have less leakage and the tires supposedly last longer. At the rate I go through tires I have no interest in nitrogen, especially for what they charge for it. Plus, what happens when you DO need more air, run back to Butler for 3 lbs?? Is total bling, but some people like bling! IMO

Joe, how long is this pre-run going to last?
Not sure. Probably most of the day. I'd like to be done before 5 or 6, but that depends on what sort of progress we make and if I find fun routes. If we don't find anything worth driving by 5, then I'll default to the December route. That one was really fun and took up a good part of the day to do.

***********ATTENTION**************

the drive meeting place has been changed to Frankie's at 9:30am. I've altered the route some and feel like doing some trail blazing so Toosy's would not be an ideal place to meet for this. I edited the first post to reflect this. Don't forget.

So we don't back track, can we use the usual meeting location at Toosy's? Worst case you can call when you are nearing Toosy's and we can join up.

Anyone else with similar plans?

Mario.

No, sorry. Toosy's is out of the way of where we are going on Sunday. We won't be going in that direction, so that's why I changed the meeting location. I would have put it further north, but the area we're going in will be new to me.

Just so you know, I'm leaving Frankie's at 11:00 unless everybody shows up earlier. Anybody running late should call me on my cell. If you're not there by then, i'll assume you're not going or couldn't make it.

nitrogen is used in racing because it is much more stable in a wider range of temps. It doesn't expand when the tire gets hot or contract when it gets cold. NASCAR use it because a change in a quarter pound can dramatically affect the handling. I would doubt that a pound or two in our tires you would really notice.
Besides if you go back to regular air you could come by and fill up for free any time. I leave the air hose coiled up (set to 185 PSI) outside the garage.:goodjob:

North Georgia Mountainshttp://www3.us.porsche.com/wheresportbegins/community/pcna.asp?mode=show-image&id=15&size=medium
Title: North Georgia MountainsDate: 9.9.2004Author: newbrewFederal state: GeorgiaStart: Alpharetta, GAEnd: Road Atlanta
Start on GA 400 straight into the North Georgia Mountains. First stop, Amicolola Falls. After leaving the limited access freeway nature of GA 400, the turns begin to be quick and at right angles. After the stopping to view over the Falls, it's straight north to Blue Ridge, directly through the Chattahoochee National Forest and the heart of the mountains. These mountains are the oldest in the world and thus with enough civilization to allow the new Boxter, just as with my 2001 model, to go fast through even the closest of switchbacks. These roads offer sharp turns followed by long straight aways. They also offer abundant trees to allow filtered light to reach the top of my head (the convertible top being down.) After Blue Ridge (the site of the rowing and kayaking event at the Atlanta Olympics), it's off to Helen, pure German "kitch" in Georgia. This drive allows an unobstructed drive through the heart of the Chattahoochie National Forest with few people, and law enforcement. Once in Helen, there's time for a pilsner at a pub on the Chattahoochee river and then it's off directly east to Tallulah Gorge, the largest such geographic indentation east of the Grand Canyon. Again more mountains with the resulting turns and filtered sunlight. South of Tallulah is Habersham county where I'll try some of Georgia's (and even the U.S.'s) best wines. From here it's back to civilized routes, taking U.S. 441 down to I-85 with the Boxter performing the equivalent of "cutting glass" as my Sea Doo does on a quiet morning on Lake Oconee. Once on I-85 I'll stay ahead of the pack and prove that 5th gear can be as powerful as 1st. Finally a stop at Road Atlanta in Braselton, just outside Atlanta. The city of Braselton was once purchased by the hometown actress Kim Basinger. It's the home of a French Chateau which actually produce interesting wine. It's the home of Panoz, an American sports car company. Most of all, it's the location of one of America's best road tracks, Road Atlanta. And here, we'll just watch the other Porsche owners from all around push their cars. Of course, I'm driving my new Boxter, which is just too nice to potentially smash it up on the course. But, perhaps after thinking about the hair pin switchback turns in the mountains, perhaps caution should be thrown to the wind. Better call my wife and see if I get a permission slip!

The Boxster factor is particularly high because:
Tight turns followed by long straight aways. Medium sunlight, perfect for the Boxter top being down. Down time watching others at the track realizing my beautiful machine that seems like an athlete REALLY is one.

Thanks Christopher.

Well that was an interesting pre-run. For those of you that left via 20, me and Chris were doing some weaving through traffic for a bit when all of a sudden out of nowhere pulls up a grey boxster with this cool girl inside. She pulls up next to me and gives me the thumbs up. unfortunately, she was going the wrong way :( , away from us. Anyway, it was a fun run, but I don't think I'll stick with it for the final. I'll try to do another run next weekend like the porsche thing recommends and see how that goes.

I had my last set of SO2s installed at Costco. Nitrogen fills are included. All Costcos are set up with nitrogen, so if you have them installed there, you can get a free fill at any Costco.
